Planet X Apocalypse - Trypticon

I love Planet X figures. Caelus was my first introduction to third party figures, and I haven't looked back. Apocalypse is an attention grabbing piece that is fun to play with. He comes in two parts. Part A is a spaceship that forms the upper body. Part B is some sort of clawed worm that forms the legs and tail.

The space fighter mode of Part A looks beautiful. I like the shape and lines, but I wish there were more paint. The canopy does open to reveal a cockpit of sorts. His weapon pylons along the sides can swivel, as do the modules where the tail fins would normally be. The nose cone and cockpit section are prone to unpegging and folding downward. I tried buzzing my kids, but the nose cone kept flapping down.

The worm mode of Part B is strangely endearing. It has a suitably aggressive face instead of the narmy one seen with the first form of the recent Shin Godzilla. His arms, being his dinosaur legs, have really strong ratchets and can swivel and articulate. His tail is ratcheted at six points with two normal hinges near the end. Although the transparent "teeth" at the front bear some of this piece's considerable weight, it doesn't worry me because he won't be in the this mode again.

Transforming and combining the two parts to dinosaur mode is relatively simple for such a large figure. His upper half is a little more involved than his lower half, but it never gets frustrating or confusing. I did cut and poke myself a couple of times on the hard and pointy spikes on his arms and legs. The combiner port feels pretty secure, but I wouldn't risk testing it by holding him only by his upper half.

Dinosaur mode is gorgeous. The purple paint applications and transparent plastic really complement the line work. LED lights also add some jazz to the visuals, but I won't be leaving them on the figure. As far as I can tell, they can't be turned off when placed in their slots and I don't see a way to replace the batteries. Like Maketoys Pandinus and Utopia, Apocalypse will draw attention on any shelf. One nitpick is that the screw holes on his right arm face forward instead of to the back.

Transforming him to his Nemesis mode can be a bit unwieldy because of the size of the figure, but it's not a particularly difficult process. It can get a little fiddly in getting tabs and ports to line up with a each other. In the end, everything seems to come together with a squeeze.

Nemesis mode is a large chunk of plastic. It certainly has a very aggressive look. The detailing on what was previously the tail looks absolutely fantastic. The ratchets at the base of the "wings" are really strong so they don't flop around. The rear section of the spaceship could have used a few more tail fins. Overall, the spaceship looks fantastic. I'm looking forward to creating another space scene. Yes, I have the rear stabilizers backwards. I didn't notice it until I had transformed him to the next mode.

Transforming him to base bode isn't difficult, but it's really not worth the effort. This is my least favorite mode. I guess it works as a base and looks similar to Pandinus' base mode. It probably scales better with legend class figures. I think I have his feet pointed the wrong way. Also, the "tusks" should be under the nosecone, but the nosecone is very floppy. After a couple of flops, the "tusks" just automatically oriented themselves.

In dinosaur mode, his head is on a swivel and hinge that is also on a slider. He gets a good amount of vertical articulation. His mouth opens very wide to reveal a mouth cannon. Although the yellow strip on his head opens to reveal another cannon, it seems to get stuck part way on my copy. I don't want to force it for fear of cracking the transparent plastic. His shoulders are on ratcheted hinges and swivels. He can raise them out and to the sides a full 90 degrees. He swivels above and below his elbows, at his waist, and at his knees. His claws are articulated at two points and move independently. He also has an ab crunch. He has ratcheted, single-jointed elbows and knees that can curl to 90 degrees. Unfortunately, his forearms split apart easily if not grasped in a good spot when using his elbows. His hips are on ratcheted universals that allow him to achieve a full Van Damme for both front and side splits. They also have butterfly ratchets. He has ratcheted ankle tilts and rockers, with additional swivels for the front part of his feet. His rear toe claw is hinged at one spot while the front claws are hinged independently at two spots. As previously mentioned, his tail is ratcheted at six spots with two hinges near the end. It does not waggle side-to-side though. His tail is somewhat mandatory to keep him balanced. The missile pods on his shoulders are on swivels.

Part A comes with eight LED lights and two pair of spikes for self assembly. The spikes fit on his forearms in dinosaur mode. Each pair have ports that have different shapes so there is no confusion as to where each one goes. I also received a separate box of another three LED lights. Part B also comes with three LED lights. There are slots in the middle of his chest, both palms, both sides of his tails, and all three thrusters.

Apocalypse will be joining Pandinus and Utopia on my Cybertron shelf, i.e., my coffee table. Like the Maketoys figures, he is a stunning display piece. The rest of Planet X line of figures are probably oversized in comparison, but the only real solution to that was to have made Apocalypse even larger. I absolutely can't wait for more figures from Planet X.

Toyworld Spaceracer - Cosmos

Unpacking Toyworld Spaceracer brought back some nostalgic but fuzzy memories. I remember picking up Cosmos from the flea market with my father. It may have been a knockoff, but I didn't care then. Spaceracer is a far cry from that stubby, single-footed childhood favorite.

I would like his flying saucer mode, except I can't get his arms and legs to stay pegged together. For some reason he just wants to come apart so there are unsightly gaps everywhere. The display stand mount helps to keep his legs together. He has some metallic painted details, but I wished his green were metallic too. The underside is pretty clean. His dual cannons can retract individually.

Transformation is straightforward in either direction. Coming out of spaceship mode is easy. Going to space ship mode, I had trouble getting his legs and arms to stay pegged together. For some reason, the pegs kept popping out of their ports. The thing I really don't like is having to yank on his head to pull it out for robot mode. I worry that the clip to keep it from sinking back down will eventually break.

Spaceracer is a short and portly little robot, just like I remember from the show. He has metallic paint on his face, chest, and feet. His eyes can be rotated between two different expressions - neutral and surprised. It is not the easiest mechanism to use, but it is very easy to scratch or dent the paint on his face. His UFO cannons can slide out to give him feet cannons. My only complaint is how the back of his calves are just panels that don't lock into place.

His head is on a ball joint, but he doesn't have much vertical range. His shoulders are on hinged ball joints that sit on panels that rock in and out of his sides. He can raise his arms out and up to 90 degrees. He can also swivel his arm on the black armatures. His elbows and knees are single-jointed and can only curl to 90 degrees. His hands do not articulate, but he does have standard 5mm ports. He swivels at his elbows, wrists, and waist. His hips are on universals that almost allow him to do a full Van Damme for front and side splits. He has ankle rockers and tilts, but his feet only tilt downward and are very wonky. He is prone to falling over backward like Bii. Using the ankle tilts will separate the panels of his calves.

He does not come with any weapons, but an orange display stand is included in a separate box. It is the same style as the pair that came with Primorion. The stand plugs into a removable piece on the underside of his vehicle mode or his butt in robot mode.

I'll be displaying Spaceracer on my Toyworld shelf to add to Primorion's growing army of minibots. Despite the wonky ankles, he is a wonderfully fun figure. For me, he definitely brings back a lot of childhood memories. I can't wait to add more Toyworld figures to this shelf.

Toyworld Primorion - Optimus Prime

Toyworld Primorion and their Coneheads introduce yet another scale to contend with. The figure itself is pretty good and definitely worth getting. It just means I now have to start yet another collection.

Truck mode looks decent. Chrome and some metallic paint give it a higher end look. Headlights and taillights are done in colored, transparent plastic. Despite some misaligned pieces, he rolled just fine on rubber tires. I couldn't find anywhere to store his rifle. There doesn't seem to be a hitch for MP-10's trailer, which is probably too small anyways.

While the Transformation is no where near as difficult as GCreation Ultra Maxmas, it is definitely harder than MP-10. As is usual with these things, going to robot mode is fairly simple. In both directions, there are some panels in the abdomen that are hard to manipulate because of the lack of room. Going to vehicle mode is where it gets tricky. Some tabs and ports have to be blindly lined up and pressed together. In the end, I must still have had something wrong with the arms and legs because I couldn't quite get everything to line up correctly for truck mode. I'll likely not bother transforming him again. MP-10 had already solved this transformation with far less fuss. The whole time going to and remaining in truck mode, I worried about the antennae snapping off. They have to be shoved into the cavity with his head. With all the squeezing and twisting, I kept thinking something would break. They ended up surviving the roundtrip transformation.

I like his head sculpt just a little bit more than MP-10 because it's a little less round. He has light-piping works reasonably well. There are extendable microphones on either side of his head. Die-cast can be found in his abs and feet. Transparent plastic and far too little metallic paint serve as highlights. I really wish that more of the figure were covered in metallic paint, but MP-10 didn't have that either. The panels on his biceps are reversible if the silver badge is not agreeable. Much like Masterpiece Ironhide, Primorion has butt tires. I would have preferred that his butt flap covered them instead. My one minor gripe is that his antennae, chest windows, and ab grill are far too easy to knock out of position.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. Unlike MP-10, the panel his neck sits on seems to be locked in place. He can still look up and down a fair amount. His longer ear antennae are on swivels. His shoulders are on double hinges and ratcheted swivels. Although he can raise his arms out and to the sides to 90 degrees, the hinges aren't strong enough to support the weight of his battle axe. Pulling his shoulder joint out too much does break the sculpt. His elbows and knees are double-jointed and ratcheted. His thumbs are on ball joints and the rest of his fingers are single pinned and articulate individually. Except for his thumbs, each of his fingers have three knuckles. Both can almost achieve full curls. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His wrists also hinge so he can actually put his palms against things in front of him Although he has the barest minimum of an ab crunch, it doesn't stay in place. The weight of his upper body causes it to fall back into a normal position. His hips are universals with ratchets along the transverse axis. Unfortunately, he has a weird hinge at his upper thigh that makes using the ratchets sort of awkward. Although he can achieve a full Van Damme for both side and front splits, the non-ratcheted part of his universal joint can not support the weight of his legs. That awkward hinge at the top of his thighs is rather loose too. He has ankle swivels and rockers and separate toe and heel tilts.

His accessories include his rifle, battle axe, the Matrix of Leadership, and a few bits and bobs for self-assembly. Unfortunately, his rifle is blue rather than black. There is some silver paint and a hint of red. It features an LED that is activated by the rifle trigger. I don't like leaving batteries in my figures and accessories so I'll be removing them. The handle has a slot for a corresponding tab in his palms. Like Masterpiece-styled tabs, this system does not work very well. His rifle is prone to falling out of his grip. Even with his fingers closed around the handle, the rifle wiggles a lot. His battle axe is yellow transparent plastic with some line work. Surprisingly, it is very hard plastic. It simply envelopes his fists and stays firmly in place. The Matrix of Leadership is Die-cast with a plastic jewel in the center. It is rather large and fits securely in his chest.

His front windshields come in a baggie. There is a choice between clear or blue. Both sets went on easily enough and can pop out with a little push. There are also clear and blue plastic to cover the mold work on his biceps. I actually wanted to use the blue set, but I had trouble fitting it into place because of flashing. When I mashed the clear plastic one in, I could not pull it back out. There are also red triangular pieces to fill in the gaps on his biceps. They don't seem as if they would fall out, but a touch of superglue should keep them permanently in place. There is what I think is a replacement jewel for the matrix. It looks to be the same color. There is also a pair of blue bits, but I can't figure out what they are for.

Mine also came with a display base. It's a pair of panels that connect together, much like an orange and oversized version of the Mechanical Chain Base sets. I probably won't be using them much.

I'll be displaying Primorion on a new shelf just for Toyworld figures. I had wanted to use him with DX9 Mightron and Tyrant, but he is noticeably taller than them. It's a pity the Toyworld Dinobots are CHUG scaled. I suppose the GigaPower Dinobots will be tall enough to look down on Primorion. I look forward to the rest of the line.
