Mastermind Creations Carnifex - Overlord

Yet another Decepticon general joins my Mastermind Creations collection. This is a large and fun figure. The quality seems to be a step up from other figures in the same line. I appreciate Mastermind Creations Reformatted figures for introducing me to characters I have no familiarity with.

Carnifex comes out of the box ready to be assembled into robot mode. Not surprisingly, transformation to his first alt mode involves some parts forming. The legs are easy to deal with. The upper body is where it can get aggravating. Connecting the canopy to the nose cone is tricky because of tabs that have to be lined up on both sides of the arms that swivel at multiple sections while being mindful not to damage the antennae on his head. It would have helped if the upper and lower portions of the canopy could separate from each other. The shoulder pauldrons are a pain. The steps are there in the instructions, but it will take some care and patience. It involves pushing some pieces past each other, but the clearance isn't there. There are a series of tabs and ports to line up along the fuselage and thrusters. There is also a pair of tabs on hinged pieces that I simply could not engage. When completed, the pauldrons were at a slight angle to the fuselage, but I suspect they should be straight. The leg pieces tab on fairly securely, but I wouldn't trust them not to fall off.

This is a beautiful looking spaceship. The shiny black plastic gives it that fresh off the lot feel. The tank pieces make this look like a bomber. Unlike Jaegertron, there are not many breaks in the form. I would prefer the large canon to be center mounted, but I like how it is so ridiculously large. The canopy opens to reveal not much of a cockpit. The landing gears roll very easily and can retract.

Separating the large spaceship into a slightly smaller spaceship and a tank is pretty straight forward. The spaceship is pretty much the same in this form, except for a different wing design that gives it a sleeker profile. This mode satisfies my urge to fly it through the air while making swooshing noises and annoying my kids. The tank is large and bulky, but the color scheme doesn't exactly instill fear. The rubber treads are functional, but they don't work, at least not on solid surfaces, so it slides instead of rolls. The turret doesn't articulate.

Although the product shots on the box show a base mode, it is not covered in the instructions. It's simple enough to figure out by looking at the picture. The results may not be worth the effort though.

Transformation to robot mode is many times simpler, but the pauldrons still cause a little concern because of the tolerances. The combiner port for the legs simply involve shoving each into place until a reassuring click is heard. It's much simpler to deal with than the TFC Toys combiner ports, but the Combiner Wars ports still take the win in design.

He's a large and imposing figure. As is usual with MMC figures, the line sculpting is plentiful and well-detailed. He is covered in a mix of shiny and flat painted plastic. There is very clean paint application scattered throughout the figure, but there are spots that are disappointingly bare. His head sculpt is wonderfully made, but I could have done without the silly grin. A couple of panels on his chest open to reveal missile launchers. A cannon flips out from his abdomen. I wish his shoulder pauldrons articulated with his shoulders. If you raise his shoulders, the pauldrons get left hanging when you bring his shoulders back down. His feet are kind of irksome. If you press down too hard on him, his toes will fold upward. It's the same issue as with TFC Toys Ironwill and Medic.

His head is on a hinged balljoint. His shoulders are on ratcheted double hinges and ratcheted swivels. The pauldrons articulate separately on their own hinges and swivels. He swivels at the biceps, forearms, wrists, waist, and thighs. His thumbs are on ball joints and the other fingers are single pinned and articulate individually. Every finger has three pinned knuckles. He has single-jointed elbows and double-jointed knees. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He has feet tilts and ankle rockers. His toes and heelspurs are on separate hinges.

His accessories include a large rifle, two swords and a shield, and an extra head sculpt. The rifle is several pieces of colored plastic. It is hinged at several locations to facilitate transformation into his tank turret / spaceship cannon. The swords are single pieces of glossy black plastic and are identical. The shield also serves as the cockpit section of his spaceship modes. It tabs onto slots on his forearms, but can also be held by a handle. The handles on all the accessories use Masterpiece-styled tabs that fit securely in his hands. His extra head sculpt is pretty much the same, but features a maniacal grin and a missing eye lens.

Carnifex is going on my new shelf for MMC Reformatted figures. A solid vehicle mode and superb robot design overshadows the few minor issues I had with this figure. A bunch of Decepticons are yet to come so I hope that MMC will balance it out with a few more Autobots soon. I am definitely looking forward to collecting more from them.

Mastermind Creations Jaegertron - Lockdown

My only knowledge of Lockdown comes from the Michael Bey movie, but I'm more than happy to add any Mastermind Creations Reformatted figure to my collection. They usually have an interesting design and are fun to play with. Despite a couple of flaws, Jaegetron is no exception.

I like the general shape of the space fighter, but there are gaps in the form and several panels simply won't line up without popping out of their tabs. The cockpit is not supposed to open, but it always gets unpegged. The right tail fin has stress marks out of the box and is bent at a slight angle near the tip. You can attach the trailer, but it turns a sleek fighter into a winnebago. Jaegertron won't displace Generations Brainstorm as my favorite space fighter.

The trailer has decent line work and paint applications. The large thruster is red transparent plastic. It opens to reveal a storage locker for his melee weapons and trophies. The clips are made specifically for the heads of Mastermind Creations Feralcons. There are only four clips for five weapons, but you can stash one in the empty space and still close up the trailer. It features a light-up gimmick, but batteries are not included.

Transformation from robot to space fighter mode isn't difficult, but there are a couple of tabs to line up on the wings and arms that I had trouble keeping tabbed in. The cockpit connection to the nose cone is very irksome. There is a bit of parts-forming involved with the disc. The swords have to be removed first. Although you can leave the head on during transformation, I found it easier just to remove it completely. The disc partially hides it anyways. The gun head attaches between the nose cone pieces. As usual, going back to robot mode is much less finicky.

Like Mastermind Creations Commotus, Jaegertron has painted lines running throughout his body that I'll have fun adding a glow effect to for scene recreations. The default head has a metallic silver face, with metallic red eyes. His legs can't straighten completely so he always has a bow-legged look.

All three heads connect via a peg that is attached to a ball joint. Although he can swivel and rotate his head perfectly fine, turning side to side seems limited and is kind of difficult to achieve. His shoulders are on swivels and hinges. They don't butterfly and the ratcheted transformation joints are prone to swinging out when rotating his shoulders forward. He swivels at the biceps, forearms, wrists, waist, and thighs. His hands are the standard MMC hands that are fixed in an open grip. He has double-jointed elbows and double-jointed, ratcheted knees. His hips are on universal joints, with ratchets along the frontal axis. His feet are on ball joints and have somewhat less wonky ankles than is usual with MMC. I'm still getting used to the figure, but he doesn't appear to be as posable as Azalea or Cynicus.

He has a plethora of accessories - a pair of rifles, a pair of swords, five melee weapons, a pair of mounted guns, two alternate heads, and one replacement head for each of the Feralcons. Each pair of guns consists of identical molds. All are single pieces of black plastic with some line work but no paint applications. The long guns appear to be for mounting on his wings; the handles are too short for his fists and the shape of the butts interferes with his wrists. The handles of the swords are painted in metallic silver while the blades are transparent green plastic. The line work along the blades is nicely done. The handles of the rifles and swords fit well in his hands without the usual scariness of some of their previous figures. The swords can also store in holsters found in his backpack. The melee weapons consists of two different types of maces, an axe, a spike, and a hook. All are done in gun metal gray with silver paint on the sharp bits. They are meant for mounting by swapping out his hands. The handles are for storage in the weapons locker / trophy case.  One alternate head is the same as the default, except for a movable mask done in translucent green plastic. His face is not really visible through the mask. This head, with the mask down, will probably be my preferred option. The final alternate head has the giant gun face like the one in the Michael Bey movie.

The quality of this figure seems up to par with the other figures in this line. My main complaint is with the loose shoulder plates, but I'm glad to have picked him up. Since Mastermind Creations has announced their version of Megatron, I will probably start a shelf for their Reformatted line of figures. I'm crossing my fingers that an Optimus Prime will be in the works.

Generation Toy J4ZZ - Jazz

Until now, I've only had Reveal the Shield Jazz and Fall of Cybertron Jazz in my collection. Neither would work as Masterpiece stand-ins because of styling and size. Generation Toy J4ZZ is quite close to Masterpiece, but I don't think that's the aesthetic they were aiming for.

This is a beautiful Porsche. The perl white paint is very glossy and shiny. The blue and red paint applications are very clean. The front lights are transparent plastic and the rear lights are painted red. The windows are not tinted at all. His sideview mirrors are made of soft rubber and don't seem to be in any danger of snapping off. The doors are functional. He rolls pretty well on rubber tires, but it seems like his undercarriage drags along the ground.

Transformation from car to robot was very simple. Everything untabs and moves easily. Unfortunately, transparent hinges can be found along the windows. Going back to car mode is surprisingly easy. There are not a multitude of tabs to line up.

The general shape of the head sculpt seems to be about right, especially for his IDW incarnation. He has blue light-piping that works very well. The transparent plastic on his lower shins are a nice highlight. He's no more kibbly than any of the official Masterpiece cars. His flanks are prone to collapsing because they don't tab in. Despite this attempt at filling in his sides, there are still gaps that let you see clear through his body.

His head is on a hinge and swivel, but he can't really look down. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges, but do not butterfly. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, thighs, and knees. His thumbs are fixed and his fingers are single pinned and articulate as one unit. He has double-jointed elbows and ratcheted, single-jointed knees. His hips are on universal joints. He has ankle rockers and feet tilts. He does not have an ab crunch.

His only accessory is his rifle. The handle is on a hinge for articulation while mounted in vehicle mode. It is two pieces of black and gray plastic with decent line work but no paint application. He holds it very securely in his hands.

J4ZZ is not exactly Masterpiece styled enough for my taste, but I don't think that is Generation Toy's design aesthetic anyway. He will be a good enough stand-in, at least until one of the other options arrive from Hova or Maketoys. Despite a couple of flaws, this is a great figure with a beautiful alt mode that I don't regret adding to my collection. I'll probably be starting a shelf for IDW-inspired figures which J4ZZ seems to be.
