GCreation Ultra Maxmas - Optimus Prime

Although I didn't immediately jump on the GCreation Dinobots, I did eventually come around. Even with their flaws, they are a fun set. Unfortunately, Ultra Maxmas did not turn out to be fun for me. Like X-Transbots Apollyon, he seems to be a shelf display piece rather than a playable toy.

I'm indifferent to the truck mode. It looks fine, I guess. His tires are rubber, but he doesn't roll very well because I can't get the front wheel wells to form properly. His rifles don't store on him directly; they go in MP-10's trailer via an included accessory. I probably needed to give the whole vehicle another squeeze, but didn't want to risk undoing all my hard work clipping in all his tabs. I don't find the end result to be worth the hassle of transformation. The balljoints on the wind vane are rather tight and I fear to break something trying to position it better. Ultra Maxmas came boxed in robot mode. In getting him into truck mode, stress marks have appeared in numerous places. The paint application and detailing are very clean and well applied.

Transformation is not easy. It's not quite as bad as Unique Toys Sworder, but the process is a bear. There are a lot of panels and flaps. Going to truck mode involves lining up a multitude of swiveling panels and tabs. As you press on one spot, another spot inevitably pops out. There are two pairs of tabs on the shin panels that I just ignored. They are on swivels and always swing away when I try to press them into their receiving slots. The back half of the front wheel wells need to be tabbed as well, but the receiving panels are not reinforced and simply bend away as you futilely press on them. If you are truly unlucky, various other tabs and panels will pop out elsewhere on the vehicle. Although mostly not visible from the outside, numerous stress marks have appeared on internal panels and hinges. It reminds me of why I didn't like Thunderous initially and was hesitant to complete their Dinobot line. Going back to robot mode is no less fiddly and no less scary because of the tolerances of several hinges and joints. I had the most trouble with his backpack section because it’s easy to get turned wrong way around by all the swiveling armatures. This is most definitely a figure I will never transform again. Had I first watched videos of him being transformed, I probably would have skipped it entirely.

In robot mode, Ultra Maxmas looks really good. Some newly revealed paint applications and chrome parts are equally as well done as those in truck mode. He has a lot of panels, many of which don't tab in anywhere. They just kind of sit on top of each other, but at least they aren’t flappy. One of his pecks had fallen off in the box, but the mushroom peg went back into its groove pretty easily. His ears seem a tad too long, but his head sculpt is instantly recognizable as Optimus Prime. He is a very lanky figure. The paint application appears to be beautifully done. Despite some gaps in the body, the line work and overall form is very eye-catching. I believe there is some Die-cast in his legs and feet. He will look great towering over a bunch of IDW figures. Most of the stressed panels and hinges are not visible in robot mode, but more are visible than in truck mode, especially two from atop at the shoulders.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up and down a little bit. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges. It is absolutely terrifying swiveling his arms because the joints are really tight and the surrounding parts visibly flex. His arms can only raise to about 45 degrees, but they can get quite a bit of butterfly action. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. On my figure, his right wrist would not initially swivel. After applying a bit more force than I would have liked and enduring a scary cracking sound, it now swivels freely. He has double-jointed elbows that can get to almost 180 degrees. His double-jointed knees are ratcheted and can also get to almost 180 degrees. He has fixed thumbs and single-pinned fingers, with the pointing fingers articulating separately from the rest. His hips are on universals with ratchets along the transverse axis. He has ankle rockers and tilts, with separate toe and heel tilts. Manipulating him isn't as pleasant as it should be because there are not a lot of places where you can hold him without squeezing a panel or knocking his pecks or wings out of place. His hip skirts also need to be extended and hinged out of the way to make room for lifting his legs. Sometimes, his waist swivel gets stuck on some of the hip panels. I fear the shoulder swivels may not be long for this world.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, the Matrix of Leadership, some extra ears, and some vehicle parts. The rifles have some line work and silver paint. The handles slot into grooves in his hands and work very well. The Matrix of leadership sits in his chest. I think it's made of Die-cast, with gold paint and chrome. The center is translucent and textured. It's actually really nice. The alternate ears are slightly shorter and come off his head at an angle instead of straight up and down. One of the parts is a hitch for MP-10's trailer. No photos of that since the trailer is still in the box and buried somewhere in the garage. The other part allows the rifles to be stored inside MP-10's trailer without rattling around.

Based on the numbering scheme, Ultra Maxmas is probably meant to be a separate line from their Dinobots. I was hoping that Ultra Maxmas would be the Optimus Prime to lead them, but I guess I'll just move those Dinobots back to my CHUG shelf. I don't regret picking up this figure. He looks great on the shelf, but the transformation is difficult, the shoulder swivels are worrisome, the flappy nature of some of his panels are annoying, and stress marks dot the various hinges, panels, and joints. For now, I will use him with the IDW figures from Generation Toy and Transform Mission, but am probably going to reevaluate if I will be continuing on with GCreation and just rely on the other two companies to fill in my IDW shelf. I believe Generation Toy has an Optimus Prime in the works so it will be definitely be interesting to see how the engineering and build quality will compare.

Transform Mission Carnage - Breakdown

Transform Mission Carnage - Breakdown

The second entry in Transform Mission's Stunticons has a stunning looking vehicle mode and an IDW-inspired robot mode. I enjoyed their Disorder figure. Carnage scratches that same itch.

He looks absolutely fantastic in vehicle mode. Panel lines are kept to a bare minimum. Is he an accurate Lamborghini? I wouldn't know since I'm not really a car enthusiast. There's a spot for a Lamborghini logo, but he does not come with one. The blue and red paint applications are a bit sloppy and the metallic perl is dinged in a few places. He rolls fine on what I think are plastic tires, but his undercarriage comes real close to scraping the ground. The sideview mirrors and rear spoiler do pop off. A little superglue will lock them into place. His rifle stores underneath.

Transformation is pretty simple. The leg bits are a little more involved than the upper body, but nothing complicated. Like Disorder, I wished the backpack would lock into place. The windshields on his arms have transparent plastic hinges. I'm not a fan on how the feet are formed. They don't really lock into place and don't provide much articulation. The doors are handled a fair bit better on Carnage than on Disorder. Going back to car mode required a little finagling to get panels into place, but it wasn't too bad.

He has a great head sculpt with an amusing smirk on his face. The newly exposed metallic paint applications are much more cleanly applied than those in vehicle mode. The line work is done well. I love the way his upper body looks, but not so much his lower legs. His knees stick out way too far because of the tires and knee pads. His feet remind me of hooves.

His head is on a balljoint. He can look up quite far, but not down at all. His shoulders are on balljoints. The rods connecting the balljoints to the internal parts of the shoulders look kind of thin so I do worry about breakage, especially since the balljoints are especially tight on my copy. They do have some butterfly action. If you work with the sculpt, you can get his arms raised outward to 90 degrees. His thumbs are fixed and his fingers are singled-pinned and articulate as one unit. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His elbows are double-jointed, but the upper joints hinge mostly in the reverse direction. He's like that friend that grosses people out with his weird backward elbow bend. They can get to a little more than 90 degrees, in both directions. His knees are sort of double jointed, but the lower joints aren't really that usable. They only get about halfway to 90 degrees. His hips are on universals. His feet don't really have any usable articulation. Tilting them too much forward will break the leg sculpt. Supergluing those loose mirrors and spoilers are pretty much a requirement if you are going to be manipulating him much. It's difficult to stand him upright without bending somewhere in his hips or knees because of the way his knees are designed.

His accessories include a purple rifle, and bits and bobs of an assembly-required mini Optimus Prime. The rifle is in the same styling as the one that came with Disorder - purple plastic with some line work. The barrel and handle hinge for storage. He holds it just fine via a slotted tab. There is not enough pieces to assemble the mini Optimus Prime. Presumably the next few figures in the set will have the rest of his parts.

I'll most likely be displaying him on my IDW shelf alongside Generation Toy (are they the same company?) and GCreation figures. I love Combiners, but they usually don't live up to their worth in terms of stability and posability. Of course, this one remains to be seen. I'll most likely assemble Menasor for some pictures and then display this set as individual bots. Since GCreation has an Optimus Prime, I'm hoping they will make a suitable Megatron to lead these guys.

Badcube Lorry - Hoist

Although I love Badcube figures, Lorry falls short in a couple of places and has the same engineering problem that Speedbump has.

I don't think vehicle mode is as successful as Speedbump. From the top and front, it looks gorgeous. The paint application is clean and looks great. From the sides, there is a lot of visible junk in the undercarriage. Are those things supposed to be running boards? Perhaps it is inevitable because of Hoist's wings. I'll probably wait for one of the other options to use in a photo project. Like Speedbump, the sideview mirrors are made of soft rubber, but they feel firmer. He rolls great on rubber tires. The hoist actually works. The "cable" is only about four inches long and can be wound and unwound with the winch. He also has a foldout trailer hitch with its own rubber tire. The green part of the front fender seems to be a little bent on mine. While annoying in vehicle mode, it doesn't seem to affect transformation or be as pronounced in robot mode.

Transformation is somewhat involved. This is Badcube after all. It's manageable though. The instructions seem to be pretty easy to follow. Despite being mold mates, there are various aspects that differ from Speedbump. The feet have an interesting mechanic, but you can easily get turned around while transforming them. The pegs in the arms and upper body hold together very well. I wish the same could be said for those in his shins. Like Wardog and Sunsurge, you can keep his shins extended for a substantial gain in height. You get an unsightly gap in both shins though. Going back to truck mode was a little fiddly, but still manageable.

Robot mode fairs a bit better. He does capture that tubby look of the original character. Strangely, he's shorter than Speedbump. His calves are filled in, but the panels don't stay clipped together very well. For how the trailer hitch just kind of sticks off his legs, I would rather they had left it out entirely or make it removable. Die-cast in his stomach and feet give him some heft. No new paint applications are revealed in this mode. I like how some of his panels and molded details differ from Speedbump. His head sculpt is painted in a beautiful metallic grey with metallic blue eyes.

His head is on a balljoint. He can't really look down, but he can look pretty far up if you move the cannon out of the way on its double hinge. His shoulders are on hinged balljoints and have no trouble raising out to 90 degrees. He swivels at his biceps, one wrist, waist, and thighs. He has single-jointed elbows that can get to 90 degrees and double-jointed knees that can get to 180 degrees, but don't expect the shin panels to stay in place. I had complained about Speedbump for his wonky knees. Lorry's are no better. This is an issue that probably could have been solved with strong ratchets are having some part of the knees clip into place. His hips are on universals. He has ankle tilts and rockers as well as separate toe and heel tilts. Like Speedbump, I don't enjoy posing Lorry. While the joints in his arms are tight, the instability caused by his knees just makes him a chore to pose.

His accessories include a horse, two knights, and assorted weapons for the knights. The paint applications on the miniatures are decent, but do get a little messy in some places. The horse doesn't have any articulation. It comes with a mandatory white stand, but good luck getting in the pegs on its feet. The knights aren't that detailed, but they serve their purpose. Both have waists and arms that are on swivels and hands that can kind of hold their lances and shields. Even if you were patient enough to get the weapons pegged in, they fall out very easily. The legs are not articulated, but the lower bodies are swappable between standing and horse riding stances. The blue knight can peg into the horse. The red knight can ride Wardog if you're willing to experience his transformation again. Hoist's and the blue knight's shields don't have any emblems. The red knight has a gold crown on his shield. I'll probably be leaving the whole bundle in the box.

After the beautiful truck that was Speedbump, I'm a little disappointed with Lory's vehicle mode. Robot mode captures that G1 nostalgia very well. If it weren't for the knees, I would like this figure a lot more. I will be using him on one of my secondary Masterpiece shelves and hoping one of the other companies' versions don't have the same knee problems.
