Fansproject Pinchar - Snarl

FansProject Pinchar was a long time coming. Like most others, I had wished they had completed their core set of Dinobots before releasing those previous two figures. Unfortunately, Pinchar really wasn't worth the wait.

His stegosaurus mode is a large and chunky size, but now makes Columpio look even smaller. He has a surprisingly G1 look when compared to the more stylized dinosaur modes of his teammates. As expected, the metallic gold paint and chrome plates look fantastic. His front and back sections has a tendency to separate on my copy. A tighter set of pegs would have prevented that.

His head has the slightest of nodding action. He can open his mouth a fair amount. All four limbs are on ratchets with a single joint at the knees. The rear legs also swivel at the knees and have a hinge at the toes. They can splay outwards. His tail can waggle side to side. Some of the plates along his back are hinged.

Transformation back and forth is very straight forward. It follows most of the expected motions of a Snarl figure. Be sure to pull on his torso until it clicks into place or he will be a floppy mess. I appreciate how his shoulder plates lock into place as well.

I wish I could say I couldn't complete his transformation. Unfortunately, FansProject seems to have simply given up on the backplate kibble. According to the instructions, it simply sits there, sticking out quite annoyingly. They should have provided a swivel joint on that back plate so it would at least have pointed downward. I've seen a mod involving a dremel and some careful cutting that I might look into.

That backplate canopy is downright annoying. Otherwise, his aesthetics is similar to his teammates. The paint applications are plentiful and clean and the line work is abundant. If not for the messy backplate, I would really like how he looks. He really fits in well with the rest of the Dinobots.

His head is on a ball joint. He can't look up very far, but he can look down quite a bit. Being his rear hips, his shoulders are on the same double hinges and ratcheted swivels. Even extending the double hinges, he can only raise his arms out and to the side well shy of 90 degrees. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. He can only perform half curls with his single-jointed elbows. His thumbs are fixed while the rest of his fingers are single pinned and articulate as a single unit. He has ratchets in his waist swivel. He also has both a normal ab crunch and a reverse ab crunch. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He can perform full forward and side splits. Technically, he has ankle rockers and tilts. Unfortunately, they are both hindered by the dinosaur legs tucked inside his robot legs.

His accessories include a rifle, a sword, and his Target Master. His rifle is black plastic with some line work. His sword blade is translucent red plastic. The handle does not have any paint, but has plenty of line work. Both weapons sit securely in his hands.

His Target Master, Lepida, is a large pole arm of some sort. Unfortunately, he seems to be a step backward when compared to the Target Masters of Volar and Severo. I’ll probably leave him in weapon mode. His head is on a swivel. His shoulders are on hinged ball joints. His elbows, hips, and knees are also on ball joints.

Pinchar will stand on my FansProject shelf. For now, I'm combining them with the Maketoys Cross Dimension figures since they don't really fit anywhere else in my collection. The scale isn’t quite what I would have liked, but it will do for now. I might even turn them all back into dinosaurs so as to not deal with the kibble on three of them. This set of Dinobots took forever to complete. I appreciate that FansProject was going for an aesthetic all their own. I even really like the art direction. Unfortunately, the engineering aspects aren’t holding up. Volar and Severo are my favorite in the line. They have wonderful aesthetics and delivered on the engineering. Too bad Pinchar arrived a little too late and finished off the line with a whimper. I hope FansProject now concentrates on finishing their Function X line of Headmasters, but I’ll likely not collect anything more from them beyond that.

FansProject Echara and Comera

Although I love having extra Dinobots, I would have preferred that FansProject had completed the core team before moving onto characters of their own creation. Echara and Comera are interesting but mostly unnecessary additions to their Dinobot line.

As dinosaurs, I suppose Echara is a pachycephalosaurus while Comera is some sort of velociraptor. They look alright; nothing great. They are lithe and and maybe a little too sleek, closer to Volar in size and form than to the other Dinobots. Are they scaled well as dinosaurs? I haven't a clue. Except for the dinosaur heads and feet, both figures exhibit the exact same line work. Too bad the robot hands are visible right behind the dinosaur claws. The paint applications on the heads are similar to the previous Dinobots, with the black eyeliner and red eyes. While technically there are no storage points for the weapons, their robot hands are somewhat usable in this mode so you can have sword and rifle wielding dinosaurs.

Their dinosaur heads are on double hinges, but the base of the neck doesn't really articulate without breaking the sculpt. There are no neck swivels. Both their mouths can open a reasonable amount. Both sets of arms are on ball joints, with single-jointed elbows and swivels and hinges at the wrists. Although their hips are on ratcheted universals, you won't be using them much in this mode. Their knees are double-jointed and their feet are on ball joints. Balancing them can be sort of tricky, but they do come with display stands.

Transformation in and out of dinosaur mode is fairly straight forward. One tricky part is splitting the dinosaur heads and tails without scratching the gold chrome and paint. Going to dinosaur mode, a very obnoxious part involved these two small, ball jointed pieces at the crotch. I found it easier just to pop them both off, connect them, and then pop them back into their sockets. I would advise to ignore this step entirely because separating these pieces is a real pain when coming back to robot mode. It makes very little difference in the dinosaur form. There is one rather unfortunate step involving a plug and a hole on their butts. In either direction, there is a bit of parts-forming with the front claws.

Robot modes on both are extremely kibbly - split dinosaur heads and claws hang off of shoulders and hip skirts stick out quite a bit. The hip skirts aren't all that useful and really can be a hindrance in posing their arms and legs. Echara has a face plate while Comera has an actual face. Both look really great. The various paint applications seem to be well-applied. Echara has an overall darker paint scheme. Her torso, hips, and thighs are painted in reverse to that of Comera. For me, Echara somehow exudes more menace in robot mode than Comera.

Both have the exact same articulation. Heads and shoulders are on ball joints. The bases of their heads obstruct any upward motion. Their arms can't quite reach out and up to 90 degrees because of the dinosaur claws on their shoulders. Hands are fixed in an open grasp, but they have wrist swivels and hinges. They do not have bicep swivels, which is really disappointing on Voyager sized figures. Their waist and thigh swivels are ratcheted. Single-jointed elbows can only get to about 90 degrees. Double-jointed knees can get to almost 180 degrees. They have the ever so slightest of ab crunches. Their hips are on ratcheted universals, but articulation is a little obstructed by protrusions on their thighs. They can achieve the full front and side splits. Their feet are on ball joints, with separate toe and heel tilts. The tails can be useful in keeping them from falling over since they are rather back heavy.

Echara comes with two large rifles, two sais, two kunai, and two shurikens. Comera comes with two large rifles, two small rifles, and a sword. There is some minimal line work on all the weapons, but none have any paint. The sword blade is red transparent plastic. All have side pegs to facilitate storage, but the small rifles' side pegs seem to be too small for any of the ports. The large rifles are ridiculously oversized. All four appear to be identical. Each pair can combine to form display bases for their dinosaur modes. All six rifles, the sais, and the shurikens slip easily into their hands but swivel around loosely. The sword and kunai are rather fiddly to get into their hands.

For now, I'll be displaying Echara and Comara with the other FansProject Lost Exo-Realm Dinobots alongside Maketoys Cross Dimension figures. I like the way the two highly stylized aesthetics work together. I'm not disappointed in the pair since I do love how they fit in with the core members of this team. Just Snarl left to complete this set.

FansProject Browning II - Highbrow

Although I'm not entirely sure what collection to put the FansProject Headmasters with, I still collect them because they are a pretty fun and great looking set.

Vehicle mode is not one of my favorites. It's not exactly the sexiest of aircrafts. Although there is line work, the general shape is not too compelling and there are gaps in the body. The propellers work, but occasionally bump into each other. The canopy is red transparent plastic. It can open, allowing Gort to sit comfortably inside the cockpit. Unfortunately, the hinge is made of transparent plastic. There is no detail inside the cockpit.

Transformation is similar to Quadruple-U, in regards to the legs. The process is not complicated at all. There are plenty of tabs and ports to help align all the various bits.

Silver metallic paint covers his face. A transparent blue visor covers his blue painted eyes. Some painted highlights break up the grays and blues. The line work is decent. For those that are bothered, his legs and feet are asymmetrical. The canopy tucks up neatly in his back. I initially thought his arms were a bit kibbly, but they are pretty accurate to the animation model.

His head is on a swivel and hinge. He can look down, but not up, at least without his head falling out. His shoulders hinge on ratcheted swivels. He swivels at the elbows, wrists, waist, and thighs. He has single jointed elbows and knees, with ratchets in the knees. His hips are on ratcheted universals. His left foot is on a ball joint, but his right foot is peculiar because of the transformation mechanic. The lower leg and foot splits in half. Each half of the foot is on a separate swivel and hinge. He can be a bit lopsided unless you extend the right ankle joint just a little.

His only accessories are a pair of rifles. There is some line work, but no paint. The handles are on hinges and sit well in his hands. They store in vehicle mode.

Gort is pretty standard engineering for a Nebulon. Articulation is limited to swiveling arms, thighs, and knees. The large face on his back is fully covered because of the transformation mechanic. He's mostly colored plastic with some line work. The visor is hinged on transparent plastic.

Unfortunately, Gort does not fit in any of the other FansProject Headmasters. His head is simply too big. The port on Browning II is also too large to receive any other FansProject Nebulon. It's even a little too big for his own Gort.

I've been placing the FansProject Headmasters next to my Combiner Wars figures. They're a little taller than standard Deluxe figures, but not quite as tall as Voyagers. The aesthetics are not too far apart. I do wish these guys were a little taller, like Sigma L. I'm hoping that Ape Face, Snap Dragon, and Hardhead will be in the works.
