GCreation Rebel - Prowl

Prowl is one of my favorite characters. My eight-year-old self was somewhat traumatized by his death in The Movie, but at least he had a rather awesome death scene. I'm not familiar with the IDW incarnations, but find GCreation's designs to be rather compelling. Rebel is a fun figure with and a great representation of that dearly departed Autobot (He may be alive in the comics. Don’t really know).

Vehicle mode looks pretty interesting. I really like the design of the Cybertronian police car. The metallic painted windshields is a design I wish were found on more figures. His hubcaps make a strangely hypnotic pattern while spinning. I don't like how several panels just sort of sit loosely in place and how his undercarriage makes no attempt to hide the robot. He rolls easily on rubber tires.

Transforming to robot mode is fairly easy because you're basically unfolding him. Transforming back to vehicle mode can be a bit of a hassle trying to line up the side panels to the tabs on his arms. His legs are a little confusing, but not too bad. Overall, it's nowhere near as hellish as Badcube War Dog or GCreation's own Ultra Maxmas.

Not surprisingly, this figure really shines in robot mode. There is plenty of line work that is highlighted by red, white, and blue paint applications. The head sculpt nails Prowl's iconic head crest. I wish his chest would lock more securely in place. It's always hinging upwards, covering his face. Reminds of the Star Trek guys having to constantly pull down on their pajama uniforms. His shoulder cannons also have a tendency to fall out. I think a little bit of putty will solve that issue.

His head is on a ball joint. He can look up but not down. His shoulders are on double swivels. He can only raise his arms out and up well shy of 90 degrees. He also has a very limited reverse butterfly joint. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His double-jointed elbows can almost perform full curls. His thumbs are fixed. The rest of his fingers are single-pinned and articulate as a single unit. The cannons on his wrists are on swivels. He does have an ab crunch as a consequence of a transformation joint. His hips are on universal joints that allow him to perform full side splits. His backpack hinders his front splits. He has single-jointed knees that can curl 90 degrees if you move the exhaust ports on his calves out of the way. His toes are on ball joints and his heel spurs are on hinges.

His accessories include two rifles and two spikes. His rifles are two different designs, but both are grey plastic with interesting line work and some yellow paint applications. They sit securely in his hands. Unlike Fuuma and Ultra Maxmas, the rifle tabs into what would be the meaty part of his palms. I really wish that Masterpiece figures would use this option, or just about any other solution. The spikes are just grey plastic with a hinge at the top of the handle. They merely sit loosely, but securely, in his grasp. The rifles and his over-the-shoulder launchers can peg onto the back of the vehicle. I couldn't find a spot for his spikes.

My original intent was to mix and match Generation Toy and GCreation figures on an IDW shelf, but Rebel looks so different from J4zz, that I'll probably just start a new shelf. Too bad the GCreation Dinobots aren't scaled properly to be displayed here. As always, I look forward to more.

GCreation Ultra Maxmas - Optimus Prime

Although I didn't immediately jump on the GCreation Dinobots, I did eventually come around. Even with their flaws, they are a fun set. Unfortunately, Ultra Maxmas did not turn out to be fun for me. Like X-Transbots Apollyon, he seems to be a shelf display piece rather than a playable toy.

I'm indifferent to the truck mode. It looks fine, I guess. His tires are rubber, but he doesn't roll very well because I can't get the front wheel wells to form properly. His rifles don't store on him directly; they go in MP-10's trailer via an included accessory. I probably needed to give the whole vehicle another squeeze, but didn't want to risk undoing all my hard work clipping in all his tabs. I don't find the end result to be worth the hassle of transformation. The balljoints on the wind vane are rather tight and I fear to break something trying to position it better. Ultra Maxmas came boxed in robot mode. In getting him into truck mode, stress marks have appeared in numerous places. The paint application and detailing are very clean and well applied.

Transformation is not easy. It's not quite as bad as Unique Toys Sworder, but the process is a bear. There are a lot of panels and flaps. Going to truck mode involves lining up a multitude of swiveling panels and tabs. As you press on one spot, another spot inevitably pops out. There are two pairs of tabs on the shin panels that I just ignored. They are on swivels and always swing away when I try to press them into their receiving slots. The back half of the front wheel wells need to be tabbed as well, but the receiving panels are not reinforced and simply bend away as you futilely press on them. If you are truly unlucky, various other tabs and panels will pop out elsewhere on the vehicle. Although mostly not visible from the outside, numerous stress marks have appeared on internal panels and hinges. It reminds me of why I didn't like Thunderous initially and was hesitant to complete their Dinobot line. Going back to robot mode is no less fiddly and no less scary because of the tolerances of several hinges and joints. I had the most trouble with his backpack section because it’s easy to get turned wrong way around by all the swiveling armatures. This is most definitely a figure I will never transform again. Had I first watched videos of him being transformed, I probably would have skipped it entirely.

In robot mode, Ultra Maxmas looks really good. Some newly revealed paint applications and chrome parts are equally as well done as those in truck mode. He has a lot of panels, many of which don't tab in anywhere. They just kind of sit on top of each other, but at least they aren’t flappy. One of his pecks had fallen off in the box, but the mushroom peg went back into its groove pretty easily. His ears seem a tad too long, but his head sculpt is instantly recognizable as Optimus Prime. He is a very lanky figure. The paint application appears to be beautifully done. Despite some gaps in the body, the line work and overall form is very eye-catching. I believe there is some Die-cast in his legs and feet. He will look great towering over a bunch of IDW figures. Most of the stressed panels and hinges are not visible in robot mode, but more are visible than in truck mode, especially two from atop at the shoulders.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up and down a little bit. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges. It is absolutely terrifying swiveling his arms because the joints are really tight and the surrounding parts visibly flex. His arms can only raise to about 45 degrees, but they can get quite a bit of butterfly action. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. On my figure, his right wrist would not initially swivel. After applying a bit more force than I would have liked and enduring a scary cracking sound, it now swivels freely. He has double-jointed elbows that can get to almost 180 degrees. His double-jointed knees are ratcheted and can also get to almost 180 degrees. He has fixed thumbs and single-pinned fingers, with the pointing fingers articulating separately from the rest. His hips are on universals with ratchets along the transverse axis. He has ankle rockers and tilts, with separate toe and heel tilts. Manipulating him isn't as pleasant as it should be because there are not a lot of places where you can hold him without squeezing a panel or knocking his pecks or wings out of place. His hip skirts also need to be extended and hinged out of the way to make room for lifting his legs. Sometimes, his waist swivel gets stuck on some of the hip panels. I fear the shoulder swivels may not be long for this world.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, the Matrix of Leadership, some extra ears, and some vehicle parts. The rifles have some line work and silver paint. The handles slot into grooves in his hands and work very well. The Matrix of leadership sits in his chest. I think it's made of Die-cast, with gold paint and chrome. The center is translucent and textured. It's actually really nice. The alternate ears are slightly shorter and come off his head at an angle instead of straight up and down. One of the parts is a hitch for MP-10's trailer. No photos of that since the trailer is still in the box and buried somewhere in the garage. The other part allows the rifles to be stored inside MP-10's trailer without rattling around.

Based on the numbering scheme, Ultra Maxmas is probably meant to be a separate line from their Dinobots. I was hoping that Ultra Maxmas would be the Optimus Prime to lead them, but I guess I'll just move those Dinobots back to my CHUG shelf. I don't regret picking up this figure. He looks great on the shelf, but the transformation is difficult, the shoulder swivels are worrisome, the flappy nature of some of his panels are annoying, and stress marks dot the various hinges, panels, and joints. For now, I will use him with the IDW figures from Generation Toy and Transform Mission, but am probably going to reevaluate if I will be continuing on with GCreation and just rely on the other two companies to fill in my IDW shelf. I believe Generation Toy has an Optimus Prime in the works so it will be definitely be interesting to see how the engineering and build quality will compare.

GCreation Hammer - Slag

Another set of my favorite Transformers team is now complete. That just leaves FansProjects (soon), FansToys (where is Grinder X version), and GigaPower (painful to think how long this will take).

Hammer looks great as a triceratops. I like his overall proportions. The paint application and line work really enhance the robotic dinosaur appearance. His frill is three hinged pieces so can be arranged. His horns do not rotate. His mouth and head are on separate hinges. His dinosaur toes are on ball joints. Both his front and rear legs are double-jointed and connected to the body by balljoints. His tail is hinged at two places, but the top section is meant to peg in to the rear.

Transformation in and out of dinosaur mode is pretty easy. There is nothing new to be seen in the mechanic that's not already been experienced on previous Slag figures. The only tips I have are to reverse the head so his dinosaur mouth can close and to unpeg the tab at his crotch to extend his abdomen, making room to fold his legs. There are plenty of ports and pegs, resulting in a very solidly held together dinosaur. You may need a spludger to pry things apart.

Slag is unusually tiny compared to the rest of the team. He's a hair shorter than Growl, but his lack of bulk makes him seem a lot smaller. The head sculpt looks really good. I like how he also has a grumpy face like the rest of his team. I love the metallic blue and red paint on his shoulders and chest. It's a pity his whole chest is not painted in that same metallic red. As is typical with Dinobots, the figure has plenty of chrome pieces. Although not as bad as Thunderous, his feet are kibbly. His dinosaur legs are constantly popping out of their sockets.

His head is on a balljoint that has unrestricted movement because his dinosaur head sits well out of the way. His shoulders are on balljointed hinges that swing upward. They sort of butterfly because of the balljoints. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His hands are fixed in place. He has double-jointed elbows that go past 90 degrees and single-jointed, ratcheted knees that don't. His hips are on universal joints. Although his feet have no articulation, his toes appear to be on balljoints.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, a pair of swords, a replacement rifle for Thunderous, a combiner sword, a combiner hand, and a bunch of combiner pieces. The rifles are an identical pair that feature some line work and silver paint. They can store in dinosaur mode. The swords feature red and silver metallic paint. Both weapons use the not quite 5mm pegs that fit well in his hands. The combiner sword is a large piece of transparent plastic, embossed with some line work and some Cybertronian writing. The replacement rifle for Thunderous is a mirrored piece so now you can plug a gun on either side of him in dinosaur mode without one being upside down. The peg is longer so the new gun sticks out a little bit more. The combiner sword comes with two handles, one for the regular bots to hold and one that forms with the combiner sword that comes with Blade. Amazingly, the big sword can store on his wings in robot mode. I have no interest in the combined mode so the connector pieces will stay in the box. There is an extremely tiny peg piece that can be easily lost.

I initially avoided Thunderous because of some less than favorable reviews, but eventually came around and am glad I did. Hammer is probably one of the better made figures in this set. While not seemingly as durable as the Toyworld Dinobots, I feel more at ease transforming Hammer than I did the other figures in this line. This is a really fun set to play around with. They all look great and are suitably menacing. I originally intended to use these guys on my CHUG shelf because of Thunderous' size, but now want to use them on an IDW inspired shelf next to Generation Toys and Transform Mission figures. I hope that these three companies are able to avoid overlapping their product lines too much so I can quickly fill out an IDW shelf.

G-Creation Blade

Only one more to go. I love having complete sets of the various teams, especially Dinobots.

Like most Swoops, Blade looks like a robot folded in half with his arms to his sides. His head is on a rod that hinges at three points, but he can not turn his head. His beak can open fairly wide. The transparent cover on his head can be removed. He can balance forward on his small feet, but I probably wouldn't trust him to stay upright. His legs are hinged at three points.

Transformation is probably the easiest of the set. Going from robot to dinosaur and back, I didn't notice any stressing plastic or pegs. I don't think you need to remove the wings to do the transformation, but it certainly makes things simpler.

Blade has an impressive 23 inch wing span. For space considerations, I will probably have to display him with his wings off. He has red, blue, grey, and gold paint applications. His line work is in keeping with the design aesthetic of the previous members. Of the three G1 designs for swoop in my collection, this is my favorite.

His feet are badly designed. Although long, they are positioned too far forward for the heel spurs to keep him from toppling backward. He can stand just fine if you have his wings straight out to the sides or bent forward, but if you angle them back, he will fall. My biggest complaint is that Blade is too tall. He's about half-a-head taller than Thunderous and Snarl. He's still shorter than Wrath at least. Too bad only FansProject saw fit to include both blue and red chests in the same box.

His head is on a balljoint. His shoulders are on hinged swivels. He has single-jointed elbows and ratcheted knees. His fists are static. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, and thighs. He has a ratcheted waist, but you only get one click in either direction before the beak gets in the way. His thighs are on universal joints. His feet are on balljoints, but on my copy one balljoint is impeded by flashing. He has hinged toes. His wings are hinged at four points.

His accessories include two swords, two missile pods, a combiner hand and some parts, and the combiner sword. The swords are done in the same style as the previous members, with red metallic paint for the handles. The missile pods can be held in his hands with flip out handles or plugged into his wings. Alleviating my OCD, the missile pods have rectangular pegs so are always straight. They have red and gold paint. The combiner sword blade is red transparent plastic. The combiner hand has gold talons.

Blade will stand on my CHUG shelf where he easily towers over the mostly Voyager figures. I have little interest in the combined form. I still can't help but wonder how much stronger this set would be if they hadn't had to squeeze in the combiner mechanic. I'm just impatiently waiting to have another complete set of Dinobots standing watch over some Autobots.
