Generation Toy Sarge - Streetwise

Generation Toy Sarge - Streetwise

I’m surprised to say that I don’t have a proper Defensor. My Combiner Wars set is back in its packaging in my garage and Maketoys Guardia is still in various stages of unboxing. I was excited to see the Protectobots be tackled by one of my favorite new (renamed old?) companies. Generation Toy Sarge seems to be a great start to another line of figures.

I love the way vehicle mode looks. I'm not a car aficionado so I'm just going to guess it's a Nissan Z. Gun metal gray paint breaks up the expanse of white. The decals appear to be very cleanly applied. I appreciate the painted head and tail lights. Despite his head and fists being visible, the undercarriage is pretty clean. On my copy, there is a spring-mounted piece that will not stay in place. It doesn't seem to affect the car's ability to roll along smoothly on its rubber tires. He also has soft rubber sideview mirrors that are on hinges.

Transformation to robot mode is not complex, but I found that I had to flex a piece here and there to get panels to slide or rotate pass one another. Fortunately, nothing scratched or snapped. As expected, some windshield pieces are on transparent plastic hinges. Going back to vehicle mode is not too difficult. It is about on par with their Stunticons. I had less trouble with it than with GCreation Rebel.

Robot mode looks really good. I'm not familiar with his IDW incarnation, but there does not appear to be any aesthetic embellishments that would prevent him from doubling as a Masterpiece Streetwise. The few applications of metallic and red paint are cleanly applied. I like how his backpack somewhat locks into place. It does not swivel around like with the Stunticons, triggering my OCD. My only real complaint is that the soft rubber hinges of his sideview mirrors prevent them from ever sitting completely flat against his chest.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up, but not down. His shoulders are on swivels and hinges. He can raise his arms out and up parallel to the ground. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, torso, waist, and thighs. His elbows are single-jointed, but are only capable of half curls. He can also bend his wrists inwards. He has fixed thumbs and single-pinned fingers. His pointing fingers articulate separately from the others. His hips are on universal joints that allow him to perform a not quite full front or side splits. He has double-jointed knees that curl a bit past ninety degrees. His feet are on rockers and tilts.

His only accessory is his rifle that has metallic paint on the barrel. It has a hinged handle that uses a Masterpiece-styled tab. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t stay securely in place, but it doesn’t fall out either. The rifle basically becomes a third exhaust pipe in vehicle mode.

Sarge will stand on my IDW shelf and double as my Masterpiece Streetwise, at least until the Ocular Max version is released or if the rest of the line proves to be too stylized. There were a couple of nervous moments during transformation, but the figure looks great in either mode. I really liked the Generation Toy Stunticons so am glad to see them take on another large combiner that I don’t have yet.

Maketoys Rover - Streetwise

I find Maketoys has more fun transformations in their Masterpiece line, but I still enjoy their combiner line for the aesthetics and look forward to having another combiner on my shelf.

I wouldn't mind owning a car that looks like this. The rear windows don't look to be in quite the right position so I may have missed something during transformation. The vehicle rolls perfectly well on plastic tires. The SHERIFF signs and stars are nicely applied. The light bars are colored translucent plastic. The front and rear windshields aren't tinted enough, so the insides are visible. The side windows are silver painted.

Transformation is less fun than on Axel. The head is on a collapsing panel, which I hate. The legs seem easy enough to get into position. There is a sliding joint on either feet, and the rear windshield is hinged so you can get the feet into position. The arms are a pain. The sliding panels don't seem toleranced well so I had to wiggle and yank a lot. Going from robot to vehicle mode is stressful. Ultimately, you have to line up a bunch of tabs on various pieces and squeeze the whole thing together, sweating as things snap, crackle, and pop into place.

Like Axel, Rover has an asymmetrical head sculpt. He has a silver painted face with a blue painted visor. There is a decent amount of line work throughout his body. It is broken up by tinted and colored transparent plastic. I'm not a big fan of the huge gap between his chest and neck, but it's only visible from above. Thankfully his shoulders are not as dramatic as TFC Gumball and do not hinder articulation.

His head is on a ball joint. His shoulders and feet are on hinged ball joints. He has double jointed elbows. His wrists and hips are also on ball joints. His hands are fixed in an open grip. He swivels at the biceps, waist, and upper thighs. He seems more easily posable than Axel, probably because his hips and feet have more standard engineering.

He comes with two rifles that are mirror pieces of each other. I think you need to be careful to peg them into the appropriate hands to prevent damaging the hands. The pegs themselves are half circles. They can combine into a double barrel rifle. There is some molded detail but no paint. There are slots just behind the rear doors for the guns to peg onto in vehicle mode, but I would not recommend it. At least on mine, the holes are not properly sized, and the panel itself is pretty thin so I'm leery of applying too much pressure to force them in.

Although I did not enjoy either transformation, I like Rover a lot more than Axel as a figure. The individual bot aesthetic doesn't really go with the Fall of Cybertron series, but once I form him into Guardia, I think that he, Fall of Cybertron Bruticus, Maketoys Giant and Qauntron will make an impressive shelf of combiners.

Maketoys Axle - Groove

Although I love their line of Masterpiece figures, I'm glad Maketoys isn't forgetting about their combiner line.

The motorcycle looks really good. It reminds me of those police motorcycles from CHiPs. The wheels are plastic and roll sufficiently. Although the front wheel assembly can articulate, the front of the bike does not. There is a kickstand to keep the bike from falling over. The line work and paint applications are decent.

Transformation is a little complicated, but it's not too bad. You just have to be really careful with those fragile handle bars. There is a bit of parts-forming. A piece of his back comes off to become a cover for the bike exhaust. It is difficult to peg in because the hole seems a little small. I'm pretty sure I don't have the head tucked away correctly because the panels for the front are not lining up properly.

He has an interesting look. Just like with Giant, Maketoys is putting their own design aesthetic on the Protectobots. I like everything from the waist up and the knees down, but am not too fond of his hips. He has cleanly applied gold, grey, and orange paint. Colored translucent plastic is used for ascents. The backpack is not very obtrusive.

His head is on a ball joint. His shoulders are on hinged ball joints, but be extremely mindful of the brake handles while manipulating his arms. Due to a momentary lapse in concentration when I was posing his left arm, I ended up snapping off one of the brake handles. A little bit of crazy glue was enough to stick it back on. He swivels at the biceps and upper thighs, but not at the waist. Instead of a waist swivel, there is a swivel joint in the middle of his back, but its range of motion is really limited. His hips are universal joints, I think. His wrists are also on ball joints. He has double jointed elbows and knees. His feet are on hinges, with a swivel at the toes.

His only accessory is a rifle, which he holds just fine in his hands. It also tabs onto the bike for storage.

I'll be displaying Axle with the mostly Deluxe figures of my Cybertron shelf. He'll probably stay in combined mode to complement Fall of Cybertron Bruticus and Maketoys Giant and Quantron.
