TFC Toys Wild Hunter - Blacker

Although I love the idea of combiners, I find them a pain to assemble. Their joints invariably weaken over time even if they weren't a floppy mess to start with. TFC Toys Wild Hunter is the final piece to their Trinity Force. While I love the way Trinity Force looks, only time will tell if I will break him down to his component figures like I have done with most of my other combiners.

His dune buggy mode is surprisingly large. I like the general shape of the vehicle. The view from the front, sides, and top look wonderful. The back, not so much. The transparent plastic and metallic highlights break up the solid reds and blacks. Unfortunately, the silver metallic paint of his spoiler and the orange paint of his headlights were chipped and scratched right out of the box. I like the springs on his shock absorbers and front grill. Although they are real springs, it's too bad they are just decorative. I was surprised to see that he dwarfs the Masterpiece cars and almost rivals MP-10 in size. The cockpit canopy does open to reveal a spot for the Transtector to sit in, but the fit is really tight. Like the previous figures, it's also a pain to open. The undercarriage is fairly clean. He rolls beautifully on four large rubber tires.

Transformation is a fair bit involved. There were a handful of spots where I had to flex plastic to make parts move past one another. Tabbing the chest to the neck plate was annoyingly fiddly because the neck plate kept wanting to swivel away. I'm not sure that I formed his backpack quite correctly. It seems like it should tab down, but it just sits loosely with the wheels providing a bit of friction to keep it in place. Transforming back to vehicle mode is not that difficult.

His robot mode looks alright. He ties in very well to Red Knight and Raging Bull. The metallic silver paint and transparent accents again are needed to break up all that red. He is a bit top heavy, but his heel spurs keep him from toppling. His forearms are large and kibbly. The spoilers on his shins don’t have a specific stopping point, which messes with my OCD.

His head is on a ball joint. Like the others, the Transtector gimmick is not implemented as well as on Masterpiece Star Saber. The face plate locks the head into place, removing all articulation. The ball joint socket on the alternate head doesn't sit quite right, resulting in him always looking slightly upward. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges. He can raise his arms out and to the sides parallel to the ground. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, crotch, thighs, and shins. His elbows are single-jointed and can only curl halfway. His thumbs are fixed. The rest of his fingers are single-pinned and articulate as a single unit. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He can perform full front and side splits. His knees are double-jointed and ratcheted and can perform full curls. His toes are on hinged ball joints. Depending on how you transform the back of his legs, he can have heel spurs.

Not unexpectedly, transformation to combined mode is a pain. While Wild Hunter himself is not too difficult to transform, Raging Bull and Red Knight basically require returning them to their vehicle modes. This means dealing once again with that dreaded ball-jointed armature of their doors. In the end, I cheated and removed those things to complete the transformation. I also don’t like how the back of his arms just sit loosely and are prone to swiveling open. Happily, Red Knight is unaffected by the broken piece of his hood.

Not surprisingly, combined mode is very striking. I was worried that being only comprised of three robots we would end up with Fall of Cybertron Bruticus proportions. Fortunately, that is not the case. He is shorter than I would have hoped if he is meant to take on Hades.  Without the large expanses of red, the line work and paint details on his body really shine through.

His head is on a ball joint, but it has a very limited range of motion. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges; they were previously his knee joints and shin swivels. He can raise his arms up and out parallel to the ground. His wings get in the way of raising his arms in front of him though. He has ratcheted, single-jointed elbows. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, thighs, and knees. All his fingers are on large ball joints. His thumbs have one knuckle while the rest of his fingers have two each. His hips are on ratcheted swivels and hinges; they were previously his shoulder joints. He technically has knee joints, but I find them hard to manipulate without popping apart the parts of the cars or his thighs. His feet are on solid (for now) ball joints.

His accessories include another Transtector, an alternate head, a pair of rifles, a sword, a pair of hands, an alternate combiner face, and some screw covers. The Transtector is just as minuscule as the previous ones. At least, he has the benefit of not carrying a face on his back. The alternate head restores neck articulation. Since I will most likely be displaying the entire set in combined mode, it doesn't really matter which one I have on there. Of note, the Transtectors for all three cannot stay in the bodies. The rifles don't look all that convincing and don't sit well in his hands. As feet, they function well. The combined sword is nearly as tall as he is. He can put on a scowling expression with the alternate face. The screw cover bits go on his abs in combined mode.

I’ll probably display Trinity Force next to Masterpiece Star Saber (once I dig him out of my garage). It’s too soon tell how the joints will hold up over time, but since he doesn’t have the added weight of two more figures, I’m holding out hope. I like these voyager sized figures from TFC Toys and hope they continue to bring us more.

TFC Toys Red Knight - Braver

I'm not sorry to see TFC Toys stop making their Old Soldiers line in favor of their combiner lines. I can always count on them to fill out my CHUG shelf with interesting figures. TFC Toys Red Knight does nothing differently than Raging Bull though. It is essentially a repaint/remold.

Although I like the shape and retro design of Red Knight in vehicle mode, I definitely liked Raging Bull's vehicle mode more. Painted details are sparse, relying on translucent plastic for head and tail lights. The racing stripes are cleanly applied, but could have used another layer to make them pop more. A robot head and torso are clearly visible in the undercarriage. His rubber wheels sometimes get stuck on his wheel wells and are prone to splaying out.

Transformation is virtually identical to Raging Bull. The double-hinged rods in his legs can be a bit confusing to line up properly. The panels on the inside of his lower legs are always coming undone. Unfortunately, the peg of his right fender sheared off the rod and screw it was attached to. It doesn't fall off because of how his windshield holds his backpack in place, but I'm not sure how this will affect the combined mode. Because of the broken piece, I didn't try to go back to vehicle mode. The Transtector gimmick is as cumbersome as before and not as effective as Masterpiece Star Saber.

Robot mode has the same stylized aesthetic as Raging Bull. His red light-piping is very effective. As expected, the revealed paint applications provide visual interest and are cleanly applied. I still do not like the feet. Being made of two separate ball jointed parts really makes positioning the feet very finicky.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, a sword, alternate headlights, sideview mirrors, a windshield wiper, an alternate head, and a combiner part. The rifles are the mirror images of the ones that came with Raging Bull so we can now form two complete feet with parts that will presumably coming with Wildhunter. The sword is identical to what came with Raging Bull. Unfortunately, the sideview mirrors just keep falling off. I could not get the windshield wiper to peg into place either. I didn't even bother with the headlights.

Like with Raging Bull, the alternate head is for those who don't want to deal with the Transtector gimmick. As before, the figure is a tiny little thing that forms the lower half of his face. It has swivels for his arms and legs. He does fit inside the cab of the car, but it does require cracking open most of the vehicle mode to get him inside. Since I'll be combining the final set, I'll just use the non-transforming head and leave everything the tiny figure in the box.

I'm not sure where I'm going to display these Trinity Force figures yet. I'll wait and see what the combined form looks like in comparison to Star Saber. For now, they'll stand on my CHUG shelf, next to other similarly sized 3rd party figures.

TFC Toys Raging Bull - Laster

I look to TFC Toys for some fun and playable figures. Raging Bull is no disappointment in that regard.

As a vehicle, Raging Bull resembles a slightly larger Masterpiece Sideswipe or Tigertrack. The panel lines are cleaner in some places and messier in others when compared to the MP cars. The flame decos are tampographed. Unfortunately, his doors and canopy don't really open so getting the Transtector inside is a bit cumbersome. The windshield wiper is on a swivel. He rolls fine on his rubber tires, but parts of the undercarriage do touch the ground.

Transformation is pretty simple. The only problems I had were with the taillights popping off when you extend the panels they are attached to and with the door panels popping off their ball joints. I do wish his backpack locked together a bit more tightly. The Transtector figure goes inside his chest and is pushed up through the neck to complete the face. It's an interesting gimmick, but is ultimately more troublesome than it is worth. It also removes his head articulation. Masterpiece Star Saber handled this in a far better manner. Going back to vehicle mode is simple as well.

Robot mode follows the aesthetics of their most recent combiner figures. The paint application is markedly improved though. Red, blue, and metallic silver paint highlight all the line work. I especially like the head sculpt. I've always found robots with mouth plates to be a lot cooler than ones with actual mouths. The light-piping doesn't work all that well for some reason.

If you use the alternate head, his head will be on a moveable ball joint. He can look straight up, but not down at all. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges. He can raise his arms out and up well past 90 degrees. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, and waist. His double-jointed elbows can perform full curls. His hands are fixed in an open grasp. He has ratcheted universals for hips that allow him to perform full side and front splits. His thighs swivel up at the universal joint, but are not limited by their sculpt. He has ratcheted double-jointed knees that can curl to 90 degrees if you only use the upper ratchets. His feet are on separate ball joints for the front parts and heel spurs, each on articulating armatures. It's not a design that I like because it is very finicky to get him to stand without leaning to one side.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, a sword, an alternate head, and a bag of parts. The rifles are blue plastic with red paint and minimal line work. They use standard 5mm ports and fit well in his hands. From the box art, it looks like they fold out to form the parts of his combiner feet. There are not enough pieces provided to form a complete foot. The rifles are also identical molds instead of mirrored pieces so I wouldn't be able to form a complete foot even if that missing piece had been provided. I'm hoping this is not a packing error with my copy. Once the missing pieces are provided (presumably in one of the remaining two figures), all the rifles should be mountable on the roof of the car. The sword is blue plastic with black and metallic silver paint. The standard port also fits well in his hands. It can unfold to form half of a combiner sword.

The alternate head does not transform. It also has blue light-piping and red and metallic silver paint. The default head has perhaps the tiniest figure yet, even smaller than the one that comes with MP Star Saber. The Transtector only forms the lower part of his face. For articulation, his arms and legs are on swivels. He fits inside the vehicle, which has room for one more. I will probably leave him in the box and stick with the alternate head.

Most of the parts in the bag should have come pre-assembled and mounted on the figure, but instead we have to do it. The sideview mirrors will probably require a dab of superglue. You have two options for the headlights - mounted down or up, which require the assembling of six additional tiny pieces and superglue. I prefer the mounted down look, but they don't go in flush. The taillights go in easily, but may also need a dab of glue. There is also a combiner piece that I haven't really figured out what to do with yet.

Raging Bull is going on my Masterpiece shelf next to Masterpiece Star Saber. He doesn't quite have that Masterpiece aesthetic, but he's close enough. It's too early to tell how well-made the combiner mode will be. I'm simply enjoying this as a standalone figure. Although their Old Soldiers line was a huge disappointment, I'm glad TFC Toys was able to refocus on these smaller but more enjoyable figures. I'm looking forward to the rest of the set.
