BadCube Huff 2.0 - Huffer

But for a bad eBay seller, I would have had the Cubex version of this figure some time ago. I suppose it all worked out in the end. Badcube Huff 2.0 is a long-awaited addition to my collection and it definitely earns its spot.

Vehicle mode looks fine, even if it's not entirely accurate to the cartoon model. There is cleanly applied paint for the grill and lights. The windshields could have used darker tinting to hide the hollowness of the cab. The sideview mirrors are on ball joints, but the top portions are loosely pegged in so there shouldn't be much danger of breakage. The metallic paint for the mirrors are a nice touch. The undercarriage is unmistakably a robot. He rolls very well on plastic tires. Masterpiece Optimus Prime's trailer can connect to the trailer hitch.

Transformation between modes is ridiculously simple, especially for a BadCube figure. Going towards robot mode lacks the explosion of limbs and panels found in other Badcube figures. There are plenty of parts that move on sliders though. I had no trouble returning him to truck mode.

Robot mode looks wonderful. I think there is Die cast in his chest. He definitely has some in his feet. The paint application on his chest is cleanly applied. The metallic finish on his arms gives him a more premium look. Badcube could have left a large truck cab hanging off his back, but they put in the much appreciated effort to compress the cab in a smart and simple way.

His head is on a ball joint. There is plenty of space to get in there and manipulate his head. His shoulders are on hinges and ball joints. Despite the ball joints, his shoulders don't really butterfly forward. He can almost raise his arms out and up almost parallel to the ground. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His double-jointed shoulders only curl a bit past 90 degrees. His thumbs are fixed. The rest of his fingers are single-pinned and articulate as a single unit. His hips are on universal joints that let him do full front and side splits. He has single-jointed knees that curl 90 degrees in both directions. His feet are on ball joints.

His accessories include a pistol, a rifle, and an alternate face. His pistol has the same paint finish as his arms. It can store in the tractor portion of the truck by folding up the barrel and handle. His rifle is grey plastic with very minimal line work. I could not find a place to store this weapon in vehicle mode. Both weapons use Masterpiece-styled tabs that function adequately. The alternate face has a screaming expression.

Finally, the arrival of Huff 2.0 let's me complete my Season 1 Autobot line-up. Like Brawny and Grump, he won't easily be dislodged from my Masterpiece display. It's a well-made figure that I'm glad I waited for.

Badcube Grump and Slick - Gears and Swerve

Badcube Grump and Slick - Gears and Swerve

Gears was never one of my favorite characters from the show. He reminded me too much of a Gobot. I don't remember Swerve at all. Badcube Grump and Slick certainly look like their respective characters and are fun little figures in robot mode to round out the G1 cast.

Truck mode would probably look better if I could keep the tabs in place. The red portions in back keep coming apart. His front portion also comes apart very readily. He doesn't roll very well for me. I can't find any spot to store his accessories.

Transformation out of vehicle mode is fairly easy. Everything wants to untab anyways. Reassembling the legs can get a little confusing. Transformation to vehicle mode is typical of Badcube. The front section has four pairs of tabs that need to be lined up against multiple pivoting and swiveling pieces. His chest panel popped off a couple of times during the process. Once you bring the legs into position, there are at least five more pairs of tabs to contend with. I won't be transforming Swerve. I don't find it worth the aggravation.

They are both mostly colored plastic with some fairly clean paint applications for highlights. There is some chipping on Swerve's face though. I think both have Die-cast in their feet. Grump has a face swap gimmick that is not too difficult to use. It's much better than how Slick's head swap requires popping the heads off and on the ball joint. Besides the nostalgic factor, I find Grump's overall sculpt to be a bit more successful than Swerve. Swerve's shoulder pauldron's could have been handled better, but I suppose you can always resort to tucking them into the backpack. They might have looked less awkward if they had been directly attached to his arms.

Grump's head is on a swivel. There is no vertical articulation. Swerve's head appears to be on a ball joint, but it is so recessed into the surrounding helmet that it is difficult to manipulate. Both share the same articulation throughout the rest of their bodies. Their shoulders are on hinged ball joints. They can raise out and upward to 90 degrees. Swerve has shoulder pauldrons that articulate on double hinges. They swivel at the biceps, waist, and thighs. They have no wrist swivels and their fists are fixed in position. Their elbows are single-jointed and their knees are double-jointed. They can curl their arms to a little past 90 degrees and their knees to just under. The flank panels on both figures have a tendency to pop open when I manipulate their arms.Their hips are on universal joints. They can achieve full front and side splits. Their feet are on ball joints with separate feet tilt for extreme ankle rockers and tilts.

Grump's accessories include his rifle, his blow torch, and a circuit board. The rifle is done in the same style as Masterpiece Bumblebee. Metallic blue paint and line work gives it a little more high-end feel. It even sports the same type of handle. Unfortunately, the fit is a bit too tight for his hands. The blow torch is just grey plastic and fits onto either wrist when his fist is rotated in. The circuit board is also simple grey plastic. It fits well in his chest.

Slick comes with a rifle and an alternate face. The rifle is gray plastic. It looks very very similar to Grump's rifle, but it's missing wings, for lack of a better term, and line work. This rifle fits perfectly in both figures' fists, probably because of the lack of paint. The alternate face has a screaming expression.

Both Grump and Slick will be displayed on my Masterpiece shelf next to all the other minibots. They look great in robot mode and bring me a couple steps closer to a complete cast. Slick's shoulder pauldrons could have been handled better. The transformation could have been less finicky. I can't wait for Badcube to re-release Huff. He and Jetfire are the only two remaining Season 1 Autobots that I am missing. Then I can start nitpicking that I want a better Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, and Cliffjumper.

Badcube Lorry - Hoist

Although I love Badcube figures, Lorry falls short in a couple of places and has the same engineering problem that Speedbump has.

I don't think vehicle mode is as successful as Speedbump. From the top and front, it looks gorgeous. The paint application is clean and looks great. From the sides, there is a lot of visible junk in the undercarriage. Are those things supposed to be running boards? Perhaps it is inevitable because of Hoist's wings. I'll probably wait for one of the other options to use in a photo project. Like Speedbump, the sideview mirrors are made of soft rubber, but they feel firmer. He rolls great on rubber tires. The hoist actually works. The "cable" is only about four inches long and can be wound and unwound with the winch. He also has a foldout trailer hitch with its own rubber tire. The green part of the front fender seems to be a little bent on mine. While annoying in vehicle mode, it doesn't seem to affect transformation or be as pronounced in robot mode.

Transformation is somewhat involved. This is Badcube after all. It's manageable though. The instructions seem to be pretty easy to follow. Despite being mold mates, there are various aspects that differ from Speedbump. The feet have an interesting mechanic, but you can easily get turned around while transforming them. The pegs in the arms and upper body hold together very well. I wish the same could be said for those in his shins. Like Wardog and Sunsurge, you can keep his shins extended for a substantial gain in height. You get an unsightly gap in both shins though. Going back to truck mode was a little fiddly, but still manageable.

Robot mode fairs a bit better. He does capture that tubby look of the original character. Strangely, he's shorter than Speedbump. His calves are filled in, but the panels don't stay clipped together very well. For how the trailer hitch just kind of sticks off his legs, I would rather they had left it out entirely or make it removable. Die-cast in his stomach and feet give him some heft. No new paint applications are revealed in this mode. I like how some of his panels and molded details differ from Speedbump. His head sculpt is painted in a beautiful metallic grey with metallic blue eyes.

His head is on a balljoint. He can't really look down, but he can look pretty far up if you move the cannon out of the way on its double hinge. His shoulders are on hinged balljoints and have no trouble raising out to 90 degrees. He swivels at his biceps, one wrist, waist, and thighs. He has single-jointed elbows that can get to 90 degrees and double-jointed knees that can get to 180 degrees, but don't expect the shin panels to stay in place. I had complained about Speedbump for his wonky knees. Lorry's are no better. This is an issue that probably could have been solved with strong ratchets are having some part of the knees clip into place. His hips are on universals. He has ankle tilts and rockers as well as separate toe and heel tilts. Like Speedbump, I don't enjoy posing Lorry. While the joints in his arms are tight, the instability caused by his knees just makes him a chore to pose.

His accessories include a horse, two knights, and assorted weapons for the knights. The paint applications on the miniatures are decent, but do get a little messy in some places. The horse doesn't have any articulation. It comes with a mandatory white stand, but good luck getting in the pegs on its feet. The knights aren't that detailed, but they serve their purpose. Both have waists and arms that are on swivels and hands that can kind of hold their lances and shields. Even if you were patient enough to get the weapons pegged in, they fall out very easily. The legs are not articulated, but the lower bodies are swappable between standing and horse riding stances. The blue knight can peg into the horse. The red knight can ride Wardog if you're willing to experience his transformation again. Hoist's and the blue knight's shields don't have any emblems. The red knight has a gold crown on his shield. I'll probably be leaving the whole bundle in the box.

After the beautiful truck that was Speedbump, I'm a little disappointed with Lory's vehicle mode. Robot mode captures that G1 nostalgia very well. If it weren't for the knees, I would like this figure a lot more. I will be using him on one of my secondary Masterpiece shelves and hoping one of the other companies' versions don't have the same knee problems.

BadCube Speedbump - Trailbreaker

I'm back to the light tent with desk lamps. Using flash was tricky. I couldn't figure out how to control the glare off of the figures and still get the amount of light I wanted.

He looks great as a truck with a camper shell. The chrome on the wheels, front grill, and front bumper are an appreciated detail, as are the translucent headlights and painted tail lights. Although the windshields are see-through, the robot bits almost resemble seats. The sideview mirrors are soft plastic and seem safe from snapping off. The underside is pretty clean. He rolls very well on rubber tires. Unfortunately, there was a small scratch on the side panel in front of the rear wheel well; easily fixed in Photoshop but annoying all the same. I couldn't find a way to store any of his accessories.

This is BadCube so the transformation is not simple, but it's not that hard. It's certainly easier than Wardog. The trickiest part was the backpack. All the various hinges have to be angled just right. You're basically storing the side panels of the truck inside the backpack and the wheel wells of his flanks. Unusually, going back to vehicle mode is not that bad either. There are some steps where I worry about scratching the silver finish so I won't be doing this very often.

In general, BadCube hits all the visual cues of the character - windshield chest, shoulder mounted weapons, arm cannon, black and silver arms, red kneecaps, and silver strips down his shins. The silver paint that was hidden in vehicle mode really gives him a great finish. Although his face sculpt looks really nice, he appears to be bit younger than in the cartoons. There are a few missteps though. I really don't like his lower leg sculpt. It feels incomplete because of what looks like missing panels. Also, his finger mittens stick out the back of his elbows. The forearm covers won't close otherwise. There's no smooth spot on the hood/chest for an Autobot sticker.

His head is on a balljoint. His shoulders are on hinged balljoints. They can sort of butterfly on the balljoint and can raise out and up to 90 degrees. He swivels just above the elbows, and at the wrists, waist, and thighs. His thumbs are fixed. Rather than fingers on each hand, he has mittens that articulate at two pinned knuckles each. He has single-jointed elbows that can go past 90 degrees. His double-jointed knees are a bit wonky. They are prone to bending in both directions, but can get to 90 degrees in the correct direction. His hips are on universal joints. His toes can swivel and tilt, but not his feet. He could have used more substantial heel spurs for a little more stability. My biggest complaint about his posability comes from those knees. They are really loose. I don't think I missed a transformation step. Wedging the kneecap covers into place helps a bit. This is not a figure I would feel comfortable keeping near the edge of a shelf.

His accessories include an assortment of hand attachments, an alternate face, and a mounted cannon for Sunsurge. There are three identical cannons, finished in silver paint - one for his shoulder and one for each hand. There is also a three-pronged hand attachment done in silver paint; I think this is his fire extinguisher he used at the oil rig in the pilot. The extra face has a screaming expression. Sunsurge's mounted cannon is for his vehicle mode and articulates on a hinge. I would caution to manipulate it at the hinge rather than at the tip.

I'm content to use Speedbump on my main Masterpiece display for now. Unlike Sunsurge, he fits in quite well. Once the figures from Ocular Max and FansToys arrive, I will have to reevaluate. I anticipate keeping him on one of my secondary Masterpiece shelves. Bring on Hoist and more minibots.
