Ocular Max Artifex - Hoist

Ocular Max figures usually don't disappoint, and Artifex is no exception. However, I find myself overcoming my OCD and and being willing to split up a pair. Despite his great engineering, I simply prefer Badcube Lorry as my Hoist.

For some reason, my copy of Artifex holds together in vehicle mode so much better than my copy of Terraegis did and looks much cleaner than Lorry. Unfortunately, his rear tires also have a habit of splaying out. The undercarriage is very clean. He rolls quite well on large rubber tires. His trailer hitch is hinged in three positions with a swivel for the crossbars. I don't think you can mount any of his accessories in vehicle mode.

Transformation is pretty similar to Terraegis. I was careful with the leg panels this time so nothing broke, but those legs still caused me some frustration. The rest of the process was easy enough. I wished that the backpack would tab into place. Coming back to vehicle mode was a little fiddly, but nothing too bad.

I like his head sculpt and am fine with the color. He has Die-cast in his spine, calves, and feet. No new paint applications are revealed in robot mode. What is there is clean and well-applied.

I only have a couple of nitpicky complaints. I find his leg sculpt is more suitable for Trailbreaker; Hoist has more rounded knees. This was something that Lorry didn't get right either, but Badcube definitely made more of an effort to differentiate the two figures with completely different legs and feet. I also find Artifex to be too svelte. Trailbreaker was the tall one with the flat tummy while Hoist was the shorter tubby one. In that aspect, I find Lorry to be more true to how I remember this character.

Like Terraegis but unlike Lorry and Speedbump, Artifex has solid knees. It's not that Lorry or Speedbump will just fall over like KFC Ditka. I just find those knees to be sort of wonky because the ratchets aren't very strong. Maybe it's also because they bend in the reverse direction. I never understood why that is necessary in knee design.

His head is on a swivel and hinge. He can't really look down, but up is not a problem. His shoulders are on hinges and swivels that let him raise his arms out and upward to 90 degrees. The wings are attached to his arms by swivels and hinges. Although you get some flexibility on how to pose the wings, they are always in relation to the arms. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His thumbs are on ball joints. The rest of his other fingers are single pinned and articulate individually. His pointing fingers have two articulating knuckles. His elbows and knees are single-jointed and only curl to 90 degrees. His thighs are on universals with ratchets along the transverse axis. He can achieve a full Van Damne for both front and side splits. He has ankle rockers but only toe tilts. The armature behind his head connects to his back by a peg, but has a ball joint connection to the weapon. The alternate shoulder armature pegs directly into a socket and only has the ball joint connection to the weapon for articulation.

His accessories include a pair of hand cannons and mounting claws, a pair of hammers, his over the head weapon and mounting options, two alternate heads, an extra pair of sideview mirrors, and an alternate head for Sphinx. Like Terraegis, the hand cannons are chrome with a hinged tab for mounting on his shoulders. The back halves can be removed to reveal mounting pegs. I couldn't find anywhere to attach the mounting claws. The hammers are two pieces of white plastic. One piece is clipped into the arm, providing a port for the rest of the hammer or a hand cannon to peg onto. The mechanic is entirely too fiddly. His over the head weapon is chrome and can also be positioned over the shoulder instead. He also comes with one green head with a visor, one green head with separate eyes, and one grey head. Initially, the heads were very difficult to split in half to perform a swap. The alternate head for Sphinx looks like a different shade of blue than the one that came with Terraegis. The hand cannons, over the head weapon, and mounting options look identical to what came with Terraegis.

I've temporarily moved Terraegis to my Masterpiece shelf next to Lorry. Artifex will stand on my Ocular Max shelf. I definitely prefer his vehicle mode over Lorry. In robot mode, I enjoy playing with Artifex more because of his solid knees. I just like Lorry's tubby robot look more. Overall Artifex is a great figure. I can't wait for the next entry from Ocular Max.

Parting question - is it possible that the conflicting origins of the Constructicons, as shown on the cartoon series, can be resolved by including Hoist, Grapple, and Hauler in a larger collective group of Constructicons, with the eventual six robot team being the only ones having been reprogrammed by Megatron?

Ocular Max Terraegis - Trailbreaker

Ocular Max Terraegis - Trailbreaker

Although I like Badcube Speedbump, I was hoping that Ocular Max Terraegis would be able to replace him on my Masterpiece shelf. Terraegis has solid knees, but I find I still enjoy Speedbump more.

Speedbump holds together just a little better in vehicle mode. I wouldn't say one has more or less panel lines than the other. They're just in different spots. Terraegis could have used more tinting on his windows to hide all the internal robot bits. I do like how he includes running boards on both sides, a detail which Speedbump lacked. He also has dual tailpipes. His sideview mirrors have metallic paint and are made of hard plastic so some care should be taken to prevent snapping them off. Although he rolls very well on large, rubber tires, one rear tire refuses to stay pegged in so it sometimes splays outward, like he got squashed from above. The rear window on the trailer cab opens, but it's mainly for transformation.

Despite being careful, I managed to snap off his left, rear wheel panel in going to robot mode. It wouldn't flip over and I guess I applied too much force. One of the small plastic pins that serves as a hinge sheared right off. I was going to try and fix it with some superglue, but attaching the panel back to the remaining pin and finishing the transformation of the leg kind of holds it in place anyways. The panel is on the rear of the leg and doesn't seem to be in any danger of falling off. It is slightly more wiggly than the unbroken side though.

The rest of the transformation process was really easy. The arms and fists are on sliders that requiring some yanking. This is not my favorite mechanism, especially since you have to yank on the fists by his fingers and because the mechanism leaves slotted grooves in his arms. Attaching his arm and shoulder weapons requires some parts-forming. Overall, his transformation process is much simpler than Speedbump, especially his backpack. Since I already have a broken piece, I didn't try to go back to vehicle mode.

Terraegis looks pretty good. He has Die-cast in his legs and spine. His head sculpt is done very well. I like the metallic blue eye visor. He has all the requisite panels and lines in his knees and shins. Unlike Speedbump, the sides of his calves are filled in by panels. Disappointingly, no new paint applications are revealed in robot mode. His spine is visible from the sides. On my figure, his backpack sits at an angle. I can't tell if it's distorted or if the spine is. I'm pretty sure I didn't skip a step, yet there is a unsightly gap at his waistline.

He's a little more svelte than Speedbump and a little shorter, but still taller than Lorry. He does not have any chrome on his body. His plastic grey arms and legs gives him a less high-end feel than Speedbump. All his weapons are chrome though. I prefer how Speedbump handles his weapons. Terraegis' weapon mounts just seem more finicky than they need to be. Both figures appear to weigh about the same; I didn't actually throw them on a scale. Overall, Speedbump seems to cut a more imposing figure.

His head is on a hinge and swivel that gives you quite a bit of vertical articulation. This is my preferred neck joint to satisfy my compulsiveness of having leveled heads. His shoulders are on hinges and swivels. They can raise upward and outward to 90 degrees and butterfly forward and back. He has swivels just above his elbows and at his wrists, waist, and thighs. He has ball-jointed thumbs and single-pinned fingers that articulate individually. His pointing fingers also articulate at the second knuckles. His single-jointed elbows and knees are good for a little more than 90 degrees. Unlike Speedbump, his knees do not suffer from any wonkiness. He has a very slight ab crunch, but I find that his chest unpegs too easily when using this. His hips are on universal joints, with ratchets along the transverse axis. One hip joint feels unusually tight. With one breakage already, I'm hesitant to test its limit and tolerance. He has ankle rockers and toe tilts. His shoulder cannons are on hinges so can tilt upward a bit. His other weapon is on a ball joint no matter which armature you use.

His accessories include a pair of cannons and mounting plates, his other over-the-shoulder weapon and two mounting options, two claw-like mounting pieces, an extra pair of sideview mirrors, an alternate head for himself, and an alternate head for Sphinx. The cannons are chrome and fit onto the mounting plates for replacing his fists. You can have either hand, both, or none replaced by his hand cannons. They also have a hinged peg for mounting on or inside the camper in vehicle mode. His over-the-shoulder weapon is also chrome. The two mounting options allow you to attach it behind his head like the G1 toy or on his shoulder like in the cartoon. The claw mounts go on the sides of his biceps and allow you to attach the rear pieces of the cannons, which need to be detached to replace his hands. The extra sideview mirrors are nice to have in case of breakage. The alternate head is more toy accurate. It has a red eye visor and mouth plate instead of a face. The extra Sphinx head is a blue version of the Liger head sculpt. Except for the cannons, I don't think you can store any of the other bits and bobs in vehicle mode.

If it weren't for his terrible knees, Speedbump would be my clear favorite of the two Trailbreakers. I'll probably continue to use him on my main Masterpiece shelf, at least until the FansToys version arrives. Terraegis will stand in one of my secondary Masterpiece displays.

BadCube Speedbump - Trailbreaker

I'm back to the light tent with desk lamps. Using flash was tricky. I couldn't figure out how to control the glare off of the figures and still get the amount of light I wanted.

He looks great as a truck with a camper shell. The chrome on the wheels, front grill, and front bumper are an appreciated detail, as are the translucent headlights and painted tail lights. Although the windshields are see-through, the robot bits almost resemble seats. The sideview mirrors are soft plastic and seem safe from snapping off. The underside is pretty clean. He rolls very well on rubber tires. Unfortunately, there was a small scratch on the side panel in front of the rear wheel well; easily fixed in Photoshop but annoying all the same. I couldn't find a way to store any of his accessories.

This is BadCube so the transformation is not simple, but it's not that hard. It's certainly easier than Wardog. The trickiest part was the backpack. All the various hinges have to be angled just right. You're basically storing the side panels of the truck inside the backpack and the wheel wells of his flanks. Unusually, going back to vehicle mode is not that bad either. There are some steps where I worry about scratching the silver finish so I won't be doing this very often.

In general, BadCube hits all the visual cues of the character - windshield chest, shoulder mounted weapons, arm cannon, black and silver arms, red kneecaps, and silver strips down his shins. The silver paint that was hidden in vehicle mode really gives him a great finish. Although his face sculpt looks really nice, he appears to be bit younger than in the cartoons. There are a few missteps though. I really don't like his lower leg sculpt. It feels incomplete because of what looks like missing panels. Also, his finger mittens stick out the back of his elbows. The forearm covers won't close otherwise. There's no smooth spot on the hood/chest for an Autobot sticker.

His head is on a balljoint. His shoulders are on hinged balljoints. They can sort of butterfly on the balljoint and can raise out and up to 90 degrees. He swivels just above the elbows, and at the wrists, waist, and thighs. His thumbs are fixed. Rather than fingers on each hand, he has mittens that articulate at two pinned knuckles each. He has single-jointed elbows that can go past 90 degrees. His double-jointed knees are a bit wonky. They are prone to bending in both directions, but can get to 90 degrees in the correct direction. His hips are on universal joints. His toes can swivel and tilt, but not his feet. He could have used more substantial heel spurs for a little more stability. My biggest complaint about his posability comes from those knees. They are really loose. I don't think I missed a transformation step. Wedging the kneecap covers into place helps a bit. This is not a figure I would feel comfortable keeping near the edge of a shelf.

His accessories include an assortment of hand attachments, an alternate face, and a mounted cannon for Sunsurge. There are three identical cannons, finished in silver paint - one for his shoulder and one for each hand. There is also a three-pronged hand attachment done in silver paint; I think this is his fire extinguisher he used at the oil rig in the pilot. The extra face has a screaming expression. Sunsurge's mounted cannon is for his vehicle mode and articulates on a hinge. I would caution to manipulate it at the hinge rather than at the tip.

I'm content to use Speedbump on my main Masterpiece display for now. Unlike Sunsurge, he fits in quite well. Once the figures from Ocular Max and FansToys arrive, I will have to reevaluate. I anticipate keeping him on one of my secondary Masterpiece shelves. Bring on Hoist and more minibots.
