Fans Toys Apache - Springer

Springer is one of my favorite Transformers and one of the last toys I collected as a child. I'm always excited to get my hands another iteration of this character. While Fans Toys Apache satisfies my need for a good robot mode, it sort of lacks in both vehicle modes.

Car mode is rather uninspiring. It seems a bit too long, as if someone stretched him out in Photoshop. The front reminds of most Lexus models - how generally nice looking cars are marred by bulbous front ends. The cockpit does open, but simply shows an exposed screw. The front wheels are rubber and the rear wheels are plastic. It rolls fine nonetheless. The undercarriage could have been cleaner. His head is clearly visible. His rifle can peg onto the tail section. His sword can store in the undercarriage.

Transformation to chopper mode is surprisingly involved. I'm not a fan of how the thighs slide inwards. They are rather tight and difficult to move. Unless you get them positioned just right, the tail section of the chopper will not stay together. I didn't run into other problems until I got to the wing tips. The yellow swiveling pieces did not want to move initially. While attempting to turn them around, all my previously tabbed together pieces came apart. I got everything cleaned up in the end. Just don't use the flapping bits as leverage.

I like chopper mode a bit more than car mode, but the proportions seem really wonky. Rather than a sleek attack chopper, he looks rather bulbous. The tiny cockpit probably contributes a lot to this effect. The rotor blade doesn't spin very freely. It comes to a stop in less than two rotations. While the rear wheels continue to function, the front wheels no longer touch the ground. His rifle can peg underneath the nose of the chopper.

Going to robot mode is rather straight forward. Transformation of the chest and hood involves a sliding rail that is obscenely tight on my copy. Everything else moved along and tabbed in just fine.

Fans Toys has definitely gotten much better at their face sculpts. They absolutely nailed Springer's likeness. The paint application is done very cleanly on his eyes and torso, but his legs could have used some paint. The line work on his body is almost nonexistent. Die-cast throughout the figure gives it a very hefty weight. I wish that more care had been taken to hide the tires on his forearms and shins.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up and down a decent amount. His shoulders are on swivels and ratcheted hinges. He can raise his arms up and out to his sides 90 degrees. However, his shoulder articulation is somewhat limited. In order to put his arms out to the side, his shoulders have to be up at his ears. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His elbows are single-jointed and can curl just past 90 degrees. His thumbs are on ball joints. The rest of his fingers are single-pinned and have two knuckles each. I wish Fans Toys would bring back the finger articulation found in Phoenix. His waist swivel is ratcheted, but is limited by his backpack. His knees are double-jointed and ratcheted. They can only curl about 90 degrees because the tail fins on his calves get in the way. His ankles are on rockers, but not tilts. Fans Toys should really consider ratcheted ankles. Quite a few of their figures have wonky ankles that would be fixed by ratchets. His toes are on hinges and swivels.

His accessories include a rifle and two swords. The rifle is covered entirely in a metallic silver and has decent line work. It uses a Masterpiece-styled tab that does not work at all. The layer of paint has made the tab too large for the slots in his hands. It's difficult to force into place and will pop out on its own, but there is enough tension in his fingers to keep him from dropping the rifle entirely. Despite the obvious seam for transformation into his chopper blade, the sword is done very nicely. The blade is metallic silver and the handle and guard seem to be metallic green. It fits just fine in his hands.

Apache will stand on my Fans Toys shelf and also serve as my Masterpiece stand-in. I like his robot mode aesthetics the most out of all the Springer options available. I don't think any of the Springers in my collection have captured his car mode to my liking.

Toyworld Spanner - Springer

Toyworld Spanner - Springer

After the somewhat disappointing Crank, I opened Toyworld Spanner with some trepidation. I never technically stopped collecting lines before - TFC Toys Old Soldiers series fizzled out before I could reject any new figures - but I was ready to stop should Spanner turn out be bad, especially since Springer is of such nostalgic importance for me. Fortunately, Spanner offers me just enough to stay vested in this series.

I'm sort of indifferent to his car mode. It's neither egregiously bad nor inspiringly awesome. The proportions just seem off to me. His tail section is a bit messy. I wish his rear wheels had been hidden because they look so awkwardly tiny. The rear fenders don't want to stay tabbed to the body and are constantly coming apart. His canopy opens to reveal a cockpit painted in metallic gunmetal that is also used on his thrusters. I wished he had more of that gunmetal instead of all that drab grey. The yellow panels in front also open to reveal blue transparent . . . headlights? weapons?

Transformation to helicopter mode is ridiculously easy. There is a bit of parts-forming with the rotor blade. It was extremely hard to peg in, at least not without causing the rest of the vehicle to splay apart. It also doesn't spin very well. From above, the helicopter looks alright. From underneath, the back of Spanner's head is clearly visible. The undercarriage panel doesn't really stay tabbed together very well. His side sections have no tabs at all. There are gaps throughout the form. Overall, the designs of the vehicle modes aren't making me itch to use either in a photo project.

Transformation to robot mode is not difficult. As expected, his rotor becomes his sword. Everything moves smoothly, except for a squeaky bicep swivel and one kneepad that keeps popping off its nubs. Returning to either vehicle mode is also simple and hassle free.

Robot mode is definitely where I enjoy this figure the most. His Die-cast chest is particularly nostalgic. Additional Die-cast in his shins give him some extra heft. His light-piping works really well. Despite being from a line of slightly oversized figures, Spanner is surprisingly short when compared to Unique Toys Allen. He also doesn't have that chunkiness of Allen. The asymmetrical line work on his chest is a bit off-putting, but at least there is a decent amount of it. I do wish he had more paint applications and was a little more stylized.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up, but not down. The hinge is extremely loose, causing his head to flop backward just from handling him and sometimes when he's just standing still. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges that let him raise his arms to the sides 90 degrees despite his shoulder pylons. He has another set of outward hinges just above his elbows that allow him to raise his arms sideways without even moving his shoulders. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His elbows are double-jointed and can curl just past 90 degrees. His thumbs are on ball joints and his fingers are single-pinned. Like Crank, his fingers articulate in pairs. His hips are on universals that can swivel quite a fair amount, but they feel rather loose. He can perform full front and side splits. His knees are ratcheted and technically double-jointed, but the lower joints only have room in the housing for one click. Comically, his knees can actually bend in the wrong direction slightly more than in the normal direction. He doesn't really have articulating feet. His toes are on ball joints. Unfortunately, his heel spurs sit ever so slightly higher than his toes, which causes him to have a slight lean and to have some trouble holding dynamic poses.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, his sword, an extra face, and some screw hole covers. The rifles are grey plastic with some line work and red paint applications. They slot into his fist and stay in place pretty securely. They can also mount in either vehicle modes. In robot mode, one can peg where the rotor blade would peg. His sword is grey plastic with some line work. It splits apart to form his rotor blade. Unfortunately, the top side is not aesthetically pleasing. The extra face has a snarl or a grimace; I can’t really tell. The screw hole covers go on the back portion of the vehicle and the side of the housing for the thruster.

Spanner will join his brethren on my Toyworld shelf. I'm glad that he is better designed than Crank. Robot mode is where I enjoy him the most. The other two modes are a fair bit of meh. He's definitely not G1; none of the Toyworld oversized figures really are. For me, that's just another reason to start a shelf with these guys. All in all, Spanner is quite a step up from Crank and keeps me interested in more from Toyworld.

Unique Toys Allen - Springer

Springer is one of my favorite characters. I loved the idea of a sword wielding Transformer who turns into a Cybertronian helicopter and car. He also strikes a nostalgic chord as he was one of the last G1 toys I had collected. Unique Toys Allen is a fun figure and certainly more successful than Sworder, but it doesn't really satisfy that Masterpiece itch for me.

He comes packaged in robot mode. The transformation to car mode involves a lot of moving parts, but it really wasn't difficult. All the tabs line up very easily. Most of the time is spent on the legs and feet. The result is a pretty solidly held together Cybertronian car. It's a little wide in the front and some of the colors may be off here and there, but it definitely reminds me of the cartoon. His rifle can tab in on either side, but he only has one so those of us who like symmetry will be disappointed. The cockpit canopy opens, but there isn't really any detail underneath. The little people who come with Masterpiece figures certainly wouldn't fit in the cockpit. The undercarriage is fairly clean, even if the back of his head is clearly visible. He rolls quite well on rubber tires.

Transformation to helicopter mode from car mode involves flipping out a few more pieces and plugging in the rotor. This is my favorite mode for this figure. I like helicopters so this Cybertronian design tickles my fancy. It definitely satisfies my need to annoy the kids with chop-chop-chop sounds as I buzz their toys. His rotor spins easily enough. There are working landing skids, but the one in the rear requires you to split the tail to deploy.

Transformation back to robot mode is straightforward, but I did have trouble with a small gray piece in the tail section of the helicopter and needed to use a spludger.

Was Springer this large in the cartoons? In The Movie, he only seemed to be a little bit taller than Arcee, so by extension Hot Rod as well. Allen towers over Masterpiece Hot Rod and stands eye-to-eye with MP-10 Optimus Prime and MP-09 Rodimus Prime. It seems like each Unique Toys release is getting larger than the one before. I don't find anything particularly wrong with his body sculpt and line work. It seems more curved and less angular than I would prefer. He has a couple shades of green with fairly clean yellow paint application. Back in vehicle modes, the paint around his thrusters simulate heat burn. There is some chipping on his Die-cast toes. Unfortunately, I don't like his face sculpt. It's too old looking and too narrow at the chin. His feet are large and clumpy.

His head seems to be on a balljoint and his neck is on a separate hinge, giving a reasonable amount of vertical articulation. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges, but they do not butterfly. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His elbows and knees are ratcheted and single-jointed. He has fixed thumbs and single pinned fingers. His pointing fingers articulate separately from the rest and have an extra knuckle each. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He has ankle rockers and tilts, but if you engage them too much they break the sculpt of his legs. Although there seems to be a lot of travel between each click of his ratchets, his limbs actually hold very well.

His only accessories are his rifle and his sword. His rifle is green, molded plastic. The handle is on a hinge for storage in vehicle modes. His sword is grey plastic with dark grey paint applications. It also doubles as his helicopter rotor when split down the middle. Both weapons use Masterpiece-styled tabs that work very well in his hands.

I will be using Allen on a DX9/Unique Toys/Toyworld shelf. He doesn't quite strike that Masterpiece aesthetic for me. Instead, he reminds me of an oversized GI Joe action figure. His size will probably work well with those larger than normal Toyworld seekers. So far, Buzzing is my favorite Unique Toys figure. I anxiously await FansToys and Ocular Max to release their Springers for my Masterpiece display.
