Fans Toys Sovereign - Galvatron

Fans Toys Sovereign - Galvatron

I suppose it was bound to happen at some point. I've had difficult transformations before - panels not aligning, tabs and pegs not staying together, even broken pieces - but I've always managed to complete the steps, however imperfectly. Until now. Fans Toys Sovereign is a great-looking representation of Galvatron . . . in bot mode.

I have no opinion on what he looks like in cannon mode because I couldn't complete his transformation.

It was somewhat of a hassle lining up his fingers, thumbs, and the swivels of his arms with the armatures of his tank treads. You have to fold his fingers flat against his palm and line his thumbs up along side his pointing fingers rather than along his palms. His arms are on sliding hinge pieces that require an act of faith to separate from the shoulder pylons. Even then, I couldn't get them to tab in completely to his flank. This is when I tried to open his chest and failed. It refused to open, even with a soft spludger. I even tried to force it with a screw driver. I stopped after a few tries because it was not worth the risk of scratching the paint. I was already starting to mar the little opening at the top.

He is covered in a beautiful metallic purple paint. Metallic gun metal also highlights some of his lighter gray areas. Some of the white paint gets a little sloppy in places. I'm crossing my fingers Takara will release a repaint of Shockwave in this type of paint application. Smart use of red transparent plastic serves to highlight his abs and knees. This is a heavy figure with Die-cast throughout the body, legs, and feet. The head and face sculpt are absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, the tank treads are on the back of his arms instead of a backpack like on Tyrant.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up a good amount, but not down very much. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges that let him raise his arms out and up to 90 degrees. His thumbs are on ball joints with additional articulation at the second knuckles. The rest of his fingers are single pinned and articulate individually. They also articulate at the second and third knuckles. He swivels at his biceps, forearms, wrists, waist, and thighs. His wrists are also on hinges. His waist swivel is ratcheted. He has double-jointed elbows that can do a full curl. His ratcheted, single-jointed knees can get to 90 degrees. His hips are on universal joints with ratchets along the transverse axis. He can't quite get to a full side splits and his front splits is somewhat lacking. His feet are on rockers and tilts with additional toe tilts and swivels. The treads on the back of his arms are prone to flapping about when you manipulate his arms and his cannon also tends to fall off.

His accessories include two copies of his fusion cannon, a blast effect, a matrix, alternate face sculpts for himself and Tesla, and a display stand. One fusion cannon is solid and the other is transparent orange. Both have hinged panels that allow the ends to transform between mounting in cannon mode and in robot mode. The blast effect is very large and too heavy for the ratchets in his arms. It separates into six pieces. The matrix has some heft to it. It has nice gold and silver chrome with a blue inset. The chain on my came with a broken link, but I was able to fix it with some pliers. It is a tad on the small side. He can't grip the handles with all his fingers. The alternate face sculpt has an angry look. Tesla's alternate face has less duck lips. The display stand is clear and is used for robot mode where it grips his crotch.

I'll be displaying Sovereign on my Masterpiece shelf for now. DX9 Tyrant is on my not-quite-Masterpiece shelf of DX9 figures. Sovereign is great-looking in bot mode. It's a pity I couldn't finish the transformation, but I still have Tyrant if I need a cannon for scene recreations.

DX9 Hanzo - Sixshot

DX9 Hanzo - Sixshot

The idea of Sixshot is awesome - six toys in one. Unfortunately, I only enjoyed DX9 Hanzo in one mode.

The transformation process, while not overly difficult, can get quite fiddly at a few places. Some ports and pegs need to be forced together with a lot pressure. Some swivels are extremely tight, making it very difficult to flip over some parts.

Car mode is not that great looking. It's vaguely shaped like one I suppose. Depending on how well you align the arms, it may or may not roll well on its rubber tires. I couldn't find any more ports so all four swords and kunai can't be mounted simultaneously. I'm not sure the rifles are even meant to be mounted where I mounted them. None of the weapons mount securely and all are prone to falling off.

Jet mode looks a little better than car mode. I'm not sure I care for the tires on top. I didn't technically complete the transformation since the tires on his shoulders won't peg in where they are supposed to. To my kids' relief, I'm not inspired to fly him through the air while making wooshing sounds.

Tank mode is a hot mess. It just looks like a robot in a Yoga pose gone wrong. There are two more cannons in his feet, but I simply was not able to get them to flip out. The treads are merely decorative and there are no tiny wheels underneath so he doesn't roll at all.

Gun mode is laughable. It's just a robot laid out without a head. You can hold it by the upper grip, but holding it by the wings will cause it to flop over.

I'm not really sold on wolf mode either. The front paws required the use of a spludger to fold out. There is some inexplicable stray paint on the back of the neck and on one of the rear legs. The wolf head sculpt is alright. His jaw can open a fair amount. He has no neck swivel, but there is a hinge at the base of the head. It does affect how far his jaws can open though. The front legs have the same articulation as his arms. The rear legs swivel at the upper thigh and have double-jointed ratcheted knees. All four feet have tilts but no rockers. Not that it would have saved this mode, but there is no tail.

Except for the proportions of his lower legs, I actually like his robot mode. The head sculpt manages to look menacing. There is some line work on his chest. His coloration is more blue than green. One shoulder keeps sagging on its hinge. The panels on both forearms keep untabbing themselves. There isn't that much paint application on this figure.

His head is on a ball joint, but you don't get much in the way of vertical articulation. His shoulders are on double hinges with ratcheted swivels. He can't raise his arms out and upward to 90 degrees and he does not have any butterfly action. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, thighs, and just above the knees. His thumbs are on ball jointed hinges while his fingers are single-pinned and articulate individually. They also hinge at the first and second knuckles. His double-jointed elbows can do a full curl. He has ratcheted, single-jointed knees that can only get to 90 degrees. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He can do a full side splits, but not a full front splits. You have to be mindful of his front and side hip skirts. His feet are on ratcheted, triple hinges for quite a bit of tilt action. They also have some rocking motion.

His accessories include two rifles, two swords, and two kunai. There are also shurikens hidden under the small tires on his arms. The rifles and swords are chrome with some line work. There is quite a bit of flashing on both sets of weapons. The rifles have a hinge to switch between mounting pegs or handles that mount onto tabs in his palms. I found them to be quite fiddly and his left hand keeps dropping the rifles. The kunai and shurikens are pretty plain black plastic. These weapons and the swords are simply gripped in his posable hands so your mileage may vary depending on your patience. They can also be mounted to pegs on his hip skirt and shins.

I'll be displaying Hanzo on my Toyworld/Unique Toys/DX9 shelf. The not-quite-Masterpiece styling of these figures sets them apart from my other Masterpiece shelves. I doubt I will ever bother with any of the other alternate modes ever again. Maybe it's a consequence of being a six-changer that a majority of the modes would be lackluster. At least the robot mode looks decent. Hopefully FansToys Hydra will do better.

Mastermind Creations Kultur - Tarn

Does anyone else miss the window boxes of previous Mastermind Creation releases? They've really been wowing me with each new figure. Kultur is no exception. He is a great representation of the leader of the Decepticon Justice Division.

I like the look of this H-tank. It is simultaneously sleek and menacing. There is plenty of line work and clean paint applications for visual interest. The underside could be cleaner though - robot arms and hands are clearly visible. He doesn't roll at all. The treads are not functional and there are no tiny wheels underneath. His turret has a very limited swivel; it's more of a wiggle. The cannons can articulate upward a little bit, but stop because of the protrusions on the turret. Between the pair, the guns at the front can cover a 180 degree arc. There are three panels that flip open to reveal missile pods. The missiles of the outer pods are removable.

Transformation to either mode is really simple and straightforward. My only gripe is that the two halves of the treads on his shoulders do not tab together.

For some reason I pictured Tarn to be a lot bulkier. Maybe it's just the proportions of the upper body to his legs in this figure, but he seems to be very lanky. Kultur certainly has not skipped any calf curls or pull ups at the gym. It is a fine representation though. I love the line work and clean paint applications on his torso. His mask comes off to reveal a face with metallic painted eyes. There is an unfortunate hole in his head from the peg, but I'll be keeping the mask on so it doesn't really matter. The eye holes on the mask could have used a metallic inset because his eyes aren't visible. Maybe someone on Shapeways will offer a solution.

His head is on a ball-jointed hinge so he can look upward and downward quite a bit. He has ball-jointed shoulders. They are technically on ratcheted hinges, but there is only a couple of clicks. He can almost raise his arms outward and upward to 90 degrees. You do get a little butterfly action on the balljoints though. His wrists are also on ball joints. He swivels at the biceps, waist, and thighs. His thumbs are fixed and his fingers are single-pinned, with his pointing fingers articulating separately from the rest. His double-jointed elbows can get to a full curl, but the treads get in the way of the fusion cannon. He has ratcheted, double-jointed knees that can only get to 90 degrees, unless you break the sculpt by moving the treads out of the way. His hips are on universals with ratchets along the transverse axis. He can achieve a full side splits and a full front splits if you turn his thighs. He also has an ab crunch. His feet are on rockers and tilts, with separate toe tilts.

His only accessory is his turret with dual cannons. The two cannons have different sculpts and paint applications. They can detach from the turret and be held in his fists, leaving him a small shield. Mastermind Creations Vos supposedly can be held in rifle mode, but I didn't bother to transform him to find out.

Kultur is another figure I'm gladly adding to my Reformatted shelf. Not surprisingly, Mastermind Creations knocked another one out of the park. Sure, I could always use more accessories. My only complaint would be that we need more Autobots, and not just repaints/remolds of Azalea.
