Maketoys Despotron - Megatron

For a while X-Transbots Apollyon was the option for a Masterpiece Megatron. The official one has weird proportions and is now absurdly expensive. In quick succession, we now have two more options to choose from.

First thing to do is remove that ridiculous orange plug. At least with mine, it twisted off very easily; no tools required.

I'm not a gun enthusiast, but it's probably fair to say you won't really be fooling most people even if you were dumb enough to wave this thing around outside. The stock seems to be oversized, and unfortunately the panel lines and gaps detract from the aesthetics. Besides the normal screw holes, there is a very unsightly gap where the barrel slides for transformation. This is a pity because in other places folding and sliding panels attempt to hide gaps in the form. The trigger is spring loaded, but there is no feedback like you would find on a toy pop gun. The scope probably works for people with a very specific diopter. There are nobs on the top and right side, but they don't seem to adjust anything.

As is typical of these things, transformation to alternate mode is a lot more fiddly than to robot mode. The panels of the stock are a pain to deal with. I couldn't get all the pegs to line up probably. As I squeezed one set of pegs in, others would pop out of their ports. In the end, I gave up after getting close enough. The one part I absolutely hated was pulling out the panel to hide his head. It is pegged in so tightly, I had to resort to a tool. Even with a soft spludger, the surrounding panel got a little deformed. Coming out of gun mode, pulling out the head also requires something to provide you some leverage.

He is certainly a lot less kibbly than Apollyon. Of note, the insides of his legs are clean and the gun stocks stay flush against the outside of his legs. I love how the trigger and guard disappear into his torso. In keeping with Masterpiece styling, the line work is simple and clean. What little paint application there is looks to be well applied. His eyes are a shiny metallic red. It's unfortunate how the screw hole on his barrel faces forward. I should have left the faux hammers up on his shoulders.

His head is on a ball joint. His elbows are on hinges and ratcheted swivels. He has fixed thumbs and single pinned fingers, with the pointing fingers articulating separately from the rest. His pointing fingers also articulate at the second knuckles. He swivels at the elbows, wrists, waist, and thighs. I don't believe his waist is ratcheted, but there are stops at each 90 degree position. He also has a little bit of a ratcheted ab crunch. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He has single-jointed elbows and double-jointed, ratcheted knees. His feet are on swivels and hinges for rocking and tilting. His heel spurs are on hinges.

He does have a little wonkiness in the ankles, causing him to lean forward, but it's not as bad as on Apollyon. Unfortunately, his right leg is prone to collapsing back along the slider. This is why I hate sliding mechanisms for legs. This appears to be a systemic issue. Neither side locks into place when extended. Kuma Style has a video on how to fix it, by removing the surrounding panels and hammering the pins. It seems to help a little, but since I'm not transforming him again, I simply shoved some putty into the slider on both sides.

His accessories include his morning star and three alternate faces. The morning star is purple transparent plastic and rather large. It is about a foot long. The chain itself is about 9 inches. If you remove the screw and open it up, you can wind the chain inside to your desired length. His default face has a bit of duck face going on. The other options are a smirk face, an angry face, and an evil laughing face. I'll probably stick with the angry face. The face swap mechanism is how all face swaps should be handled. The helmet comes off ala Darth Vader, allowing you to untab the face, tab in the new one, and slide the helmet back on.

I'll continue to use Apollyon on my Masterpiece shelf. There is something about Despotron's head sculpt that is not quite doing it for me. I will use him for photo projects as his arms don't simply fall off, but use Apollyon where it is helpful to have removable arms. Despotron wiill hang out on a shelf with some other Maketoys and Fanstoys figures that are or will be duplicated by official figures or other options for me; a second Masterpiece grouping. Although we don't really need one, I can only hope that a Masterpiece Maketoys or FansToys Optimus Prime is in the works to complete the pair. I'm looking forward to see how DX9 Mightron compares.

Planet X Asclepius - Fall of Cybertron Perceptor

Planet X Asclepius continues the tradition of being named after Roman gods. In this case, he is named after the god of medicine.

If you are wondering about the reflections, I'm trying out a slightly different lighting technique and a new plexiglass board which seems much more reflective than the previous one.

My copy came with a defect. A red transparent plastic panel is missing from his upper left thigh.

I'm not that enamored with the tank mode. It's a bit misshapen, but I suppose it's faithful to the source material. The side cannons can swivel vertically. The main cannon is on a hinge. Its connection peg is rather loose so the whole thing kept popping off. The shape of the vehicle doesn't really show off the line work and transparent plastic details. It's unfortunate that the upper arms have their screw holes facing outward. The eight "wheels" are on ball joints, but they don't really touch the ground. I like how the way they articulate gives the illusion of a vehicle rolling over uneven terrain, but he has no wheels on the undercarriage so he doesn't actually roll.

Transformation into either mode is pretty easy and straight forward. As usual, it gets a little fiddly going into vehicle mode because of how you have to align the thighs and arms so that things will peg together. Technically, there is a bit of parts forming with the cannon.

He's not quite as tall as a Voyager, but is larger than a Deluxe. IT'F Abyss stands a smidge taller, and Planet X Vulcun still manages to tower over him. The transparent red plastic are nice highlights to his line work. The paint application seems to be very clean and well done. His eyes are painted yellow despite the light piping on the back of his head. The scope can peg onto either shoulder . . . back hump. The only detail I don't like are the wheels on his legs, which just seem a bit messy. I wished that they at least all clicked into an aligned position.

His head is on a ball joint. His shoulders are on hinges and swivels, and can also butterfly forward. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His hands are fixed. He has single-jointed elbows and knees. He also has a reverse ab crunch. His hips are on universals. His ankles are on swiveling hinges to allow for tilting and rocking. They are really wonky though. Across six Dinobots, not one has properly designed feet. Asclepius inherits that trait. Using the blue part of his feet as heel spurs actually makes him more prone to falling backward. He's more stable with them folded up against the back of his leg and only using the rotating pieces as support. His shoulder cannon is on a peg so it can swivel. It can also hinge upward just a little.

His accessories include two guns, a sniper rifle, and two cannons. The guns are black plastic with a decent amount of line work. They fit well in his hands. The sniper rifle has some red paint and an extendable barrel. It is nearly 7 inches long; almost as tall as Asclepius himself. It also fits well in his hands. There are also side handles for him to hold with the opposite hand. The pair of guns can combine with the rifle. The cannons are rather large. They have a mix of red and black paint amongst the red and black plastic. The barrels and back ends of the cannons are on sliders. The cannons are gripped from underneath. It's a pity there is no transparent plastic on any of the weapons. All but the sniper rifle has a place in vehicle mode.

Although I don't enjoy the vehicle mode too much, I do love the robot mode, and that's where I keep my figures anyways. My QC issue is somewhat of a downer, but hopefully it's just a bit of bad luck and not a systemic problem. I guess I'll be starting a new shelf for this line and migrating over the Planet X Dinobots, and maybe Bumblebee and Cliffjumper. I am looking forward to replacing the official Fall of Cybertron figures with whatever Planet X has planned.

Notice regarding XTransbots MM-IV+ Ollie

XTransbots MM-VI+ Ollie

Hello Everyone,

As many of you know, we were expecting the arrival of X-Transbots toys Ollie 2.0 this week and it is still set to arrive. However, we have been notified by X-Transbots that there is a potential for paint scratching on the diecast thighs, so they have asked us to hold the shipment until they can issue the replacement parts to prevent the potential problem. From our understanding, once we have the parts, we will send them with Ollie together for you. We will attempt to show the areas of concern for you, and also try to highlight the fix that will be necessary to avoid the paint scratching. We appreciate your patience and understanding as X-Transbots remedies this potential problem. Stay Tuned……

Thank you.

Maketoys Striker Manus - Optimus Prime

I'm a sucker for Maketoys figures so was excited when I heard about this new version of Optimus Prime.

This is a great looking truck. It has a Cybertronian aesthetic. Even the undercarriage does a great job of hiding the robot form. He rolls alright on his plastic tires. The middle pair of tires don't always touch the ground. The inner pair of the rear tires are merely decorative and do not rotate. I like how his weapons form the smoke stacks and wind vane. I don't see a port for a trailer, but I don't suppose that would stop someone making an add-on.

Transformation into vehicle mode is not difficult. There are some panels and tabs that need lining up, but everything comes together pretty easily. The arms form the cab in a very similar manner to MP-10. Going back to robot mode is even easier.

He's a little larger than Voyager size. This figure seems to be all about the line work. Not surprisingly, the paint application is cleanly applied. The transparent windshield on his chest looks great too. I don't like the forearm flaps. They're not as bad as those on Classics Optimus Prime, but they don't tab in place so are constantly flapping about.

His head is on a ball joint. Both shoulders are double-jointed, with ball joints and hinges. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and hips. His thumbs are fixed and his fingers are single-pinned. The pointing fingers articulate separately from the rest. He has single-jointed elbows and double-jointed knees. He also has an ab crunch. His hips are on universal joints. He has ankle rockers and tilts. His toes are on hinges.

Delineating a figure's articulation points sometimes doesn't give a proper sense of how posable, or not, a figure is. Striker Manus is extremely easy to pose. His heel spurs could be more functional. The ab crunch and double-jointed knees almost gives him an action figure level of posability.

His accessories include a rifle and a pair of battle axes. The rifle is several pieces of colored plastic, joined by a couple of hinges and a sliding mechanism. There is no line work, which makes it stand out from the richly detailed figure. Annoyingly, the sliding part doesn't click into place at the end. The slotted handle works well with the grooves in his hands. The battle axes are metallic gray, with good line work. I love how the blade is orange transparent plastic. They fit rather loosely in his hands. The slot and groove, if that is even what the mold on the handles are, don't pair well together.

For now, I'll use Striker Manus and Riotter Despotron to start a new shelf. I like how the FansProject Dinobots work with this design so I'll move them over from my Prime shelf. Badcube Sunsurge and Spinout will come here too since I've been growing dissatisfied with their scale and design for a Masterpiece shelf. I can't wait for Riotter Despotron, and can only hope that Maketoys continues to work on more figures in this style and scale.
