Planet X Apollo - Ultra Magnus

I never got my hands on a Fall of Cybertron Ultra Magnus. I didn't like the smaller Optimus Prime figure it was based off of and that one third party figure turned into vaporware. Planet X Apollo is essentially an armor kit with a repainted Jupiter, but the end result is glorious.

The base truck mode is the same as Jupiter. All the armor parts attach to give him more bulk. It's a nice idea, but it was not implemented very well. The tabs are too weak to hold all the various pieces securely together. Things are constantly popping off somewhere or another. I believe the front and middle to back sections are supposed to be at an angle to each other. On my copy, they follow the same slope. If I press down on the back, things will start falling off. The crotch piece is supposed to tab in there, but I have to leave it out as it always falls off. It still rolls very well on three pairs of plastic tires. His hammer is part of the "glue" holding things together, but I couldn't figure out how to attach his rifle.

Transformation is pretty much what I remembered of Jupiter, down to the annoying feet that have to be fed through his legs. You cannot keep the armor pieces on through transformation even if you are aiming for the armored robot mode because the armor pieces require some parts-forming themselves. For the unarmored robot mode, you need to swap out the armor for the smoke stack pieces or his shoulders will be bare and hollow.

His unarmored form is basically an off-white version of Jupiter. It is still an awesome figure. The paint is not as striking as Jupiter's, but the highlights are still clean and pop off the figure. He has metallic painted eyes instead of light-piping. My only criticism would be that hole in his crotch where his armor attaches. Articulation is exactly the same as Jupiter and doesn't change much to his armored mode.

Attaching all the armor parts is far less finicky in robot mode than it is in truck mode. It does require pushing those feet back through the shins and removing the four black thrusters to plug in his larger feet. The crotch armor pegs into that unsightly hole in his crotch.

Armored mode looks absolutely wonderful. His chest is very evocative of the character. I like how his shoulder pylons are not ridiculously elongated like on the Combiner Wars version. He doesn't dwarf Optimus Prime like his Masterpiece counterpart does, but is still larger. I love the Fall of Cybertron aesthetic, especially as Planet X has given us in their entire line up. Apollo is no different with the cleanly applied paint and line work. My only complaint is that his neck flap doesn't peg in anywhere. It just sits loosely on top of the torso.

His head is on a ball joint while his neck is on a hinged flap. He can look up, but not down without raising the flap and breaking the form. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges. He can only raise his arms up and outward well shy of 45 degrees. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His elbows are single-jointed and can only curl about 90 degrees. His thumbs are on ball joints and are hinged at the lower knuckles. The rest of his fingers are single-pinned and articulate individually. None of the knuckles are hinged, but his fingers are all curved. He has a waist swivel, but it is impeded by the ab portion of his armor. His hips are on universal joints. He can perform a full front splits, but his crotch armor prevents him from performing a side splits. His knees are single-jointed. They can't quite curl to 90 degrees. His feet are on tilts while his toes are hinged.

His accessories include his rifle, his hammer, all his armor parts, a baggie of bits to attach to his body, and the Matrix of Leadership. Both weapons have some blue highlights and molded details. Both sit in his smaller unarmored fists just fine, but sit loosely in his armored fists. The Matrix is gray plastic with a plastic jewel in the middle.

Apollo will stand on my Planet X shelf. It is a fine piece that I waited a long time to get. Planet X is one the first third party companies I purchased from and will happily continue to do so. Bring on the Insecticons!

Planet X Pluto - Megatron

The High Moon games were what rekindled my interest in Transformers. I love the design of the characters and was disappointed that the official figures, except for two or three, are all on the smaller side. Thankfully, Planet X came to the rescue with their Dinobots and have spread into the other characters. Pluto is their latest offering. Not surprisingly, I love this figure.

Hovertank mode is not hateful. There are a lot of gaps in the form, but the overall shape is very interesting. Spikes and sharp edges adorn the vehicle. I'm surprised by how well he actually holds together. The small handful of tabs keeps almost everything tightly positioned. With his knee spikes and feet folded out, he reminds me of a Zerg Guardian. Unfortunately, his cannon does not articulate. His head is clearly visible in the undercarriage.

Transformation to robot mode is not difficult since you are essentially unfolding him. However, going back to vehicle mode is not fun. I kept knocking off the spikes on his back and his feet assembly have no real clear places to peg to. Not surprisingly, his cannon requires a bit of parts-forming, but is integral in holding the tank mode together.

He has a very striking presence. The metallic purple paint applications and purple translucent plastic look absolutely stunning. He has the same bulky torso as Neptune and Vulcun and is covered in spikes. His face could stand to look a bit fiercer, but otherwise is great. I don't like how his chest is a bit flappy though. Also, his feet are a fiddly, kind of like how Vulcun's were.

His head is on a ball joint. He has a decent range of motion, but nothing great. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and double hinges. Despite his shoulder spikes, he can raise his arms up and out parallel to the ground. He swivels at his biceps, wrist, waists, and thighs. His elbows are single-jointed and ratcheted. He can only curl to 90 degrees. His thumbs are fixed. The rest of his fingers are single-pinned and articulate as a single unit. His waist swivel requires you to move his crotch plate out of the way first. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He can perform both front and side splits to rival Van Damme. His knees are double-jointed and ratcheted, but he can only curl his legs about 90 degrees. His feet are on hinged ball joints while his toes and heel spurs are on their own hinges.

His accessories include his fusion cannon, a sword, a bunch of spiky bits, and a some screw hole covers. His fusion canon is quite large and nicely detailed. It can peg to either arm. Like his fusion cannon, his sword is also large. It is covered in line work, but no paint. He holds it very securely, but it is a bear to force into his grasp. As usual, the self-assembly bits are a pain to push into place. They fill out his back with spikes and cover screw holes in his shoulders, back, and thighs.

Pluto will stand on my Planet X shelf. Despite a couple of flaws, my enjoyment of this figure is not dampened in the slightest. I do not regret putting my official War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron figures into storage and am content to wait on Planet X to fill out my shelf.

Planet X Jupiter - Fall of Cybertron Optimus Prime

The official Fall of Cybertron Optimus Prime figure was such a disappointment when compared to the War for Cybertron figure because of its smaller size and less complex transformation. Planet X Jupiter corrects those issues and is an impressive addition to the Planet X line.

The Cybertronian truck pretty much looks like it leapt out of the game. It looks great, but I still prefer his War for Cybertron truck mode. The line work and energon lines look fantastic. He rolls fairly well on plastic tires. His rifle does peg onto the top, but lining up the the two tabs was very fiddly for me. Trying to peg it in always resulted in the arms untabbing from their panels.

Transformation from robot to truck mode was not too hard, but it was kind of fiddly. The hardest part is the legs. Feeding the thrusters from the back of the lower legs to the front is kind of tricky. You just have to patiently work that double hinge to get enough clearance. The panel with the wheels also takes some force to clip into place. I couldn't get the top thrusters to stay tabbed into the legs/back of the truck. One side or the other would keep popping out. Going back to robot mode was easier, but you still have to patiently work those thrusters through the leg.

I just noticed that every Planet X figure has that swirly pattern on the plastic. Pink energon lines and metallic silver paint applications complement the line work. He has a beautiful head sculpt, with blue light-piping that works really well.

His head is on a balljoint. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges. They do not butterfly. His shoulder pylons are on their own hinges. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His thumbs are fixed. His fingers are single-pinned and articulate as one unit. He has single-jointed elbows that get to 90 degrees and single-jointed knees that almost get to 90 degrees. His hips are on universal joints. He has ankle tilts and foot rockers. 

His accessories include his rifle, a sword, and a battle axe. The rifle has cleanly applied blue paint. It has a standard port that fits well in his hands. The scope is on a hinge to facilitate that hand-turned-gun look. The sword and battle axe have black handles and red transparent plastic blades. The handles simply slot into the ports on his hands and stay firmly in place.

Jupiter will be standing on my Planet X shelf, next to his War for Cybertron version from IT'F. When viewed side-by-side it really looks like Optimus Prime upgraded himself. Despite some fiddliness with the truck mode, this is a great figure. I hope that Planet X will bring us a worthy Megatron next.

Planet X Mors - Fall of Cybertron Starscream

Planet X Mors is most likely named after the Roman personification, not god, of death. Sort of like the Grim Reaper. He's another fun piece from a company that exposed me to third party figures.

Jet mode is a bit of a hit and miss. It's certainly better than the official figure. There is no large gap behind the cockpit that goes clear through the fuselage; just a bunch of tiny ones. From the top, the jet has a nice silhouette, even if the fuselage seems too long compared to the wings. From the sides, it's a little less successful. From underneath, Starscream is playing peek-a-boo. I do like the translucent red plastic for the thrusters in the bottom of the feet. The canopy can open a little to reveal a decent looking cockpit. The front landing skid flips out from under the nosecone, but you have to split the underside to do it. The rear landing skids are permanently deployed. His null rays peg well to his wings.

Transformation to jet mode is actually pretty easy. The backpack probably has the most involved process. The legs are very similar to the Combiner Wars Aerialbots, in that they fold up into themselves. Lining up the pegs on the backpack and wings to the ports on the legs can be a little finicky, but it's not very difficult. Once you get the clasps on the legs to grasp the back of the elbows, you have a very solidly held together jet. As usual, going back to robot mode is a piece of cake.

The size difference aside, this figure is definitely a step up from the official Fall of Cybertron Starscream. Better paint application, more detailed sculpting, improved articulation, and a side profile that doesn't have gaping holes are a few things that immediately jump out at me. The only thing the official one does better is the placement of screw holes. The head sculpt looks really good, but the light-piping doesn't work very well. The back is also prone to detaching from it's pair of pegs.

His head is on a ball joint. His shoulders are on swivels and hinges, with a slight bit of butterfly action. The shoulder pauldrons are on their own swivels and hinges. They sometimes get in the way of the shoulder articulation. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, and thighs. His waist swivel is a little hindered by his abdomen. His thumbs are fixed and the rest of his fingers are single pinned and articulate as one unit. He has double-jointed elbows that give you a full 180 degree bend and single-jointed knees that get to 90 degrees. He also has a reverse ab crunch because of a transformation joint. His hips are on universal joints. His feet are on balljoints for rocking and tilting, and his toes are on hinges.

His accessories include two null rays, a spiked mace, and his crown. The null rays are identical. Although there is some decent line work, the very minimal purple paint application is really sloppy. They peg into his hands or arms just fine. The handles are on swivels so can be tucked away, but I couldn't figure out how to attach them so it would look like his hands transformed into weapons. The head of the mace is purple translucent plastic. The spikes aren't sharp. I'd be more worried about breakage from a drop. The handle separates from the head to slide into his fist. He can only hold it at the upper half of the handle. The crown is nicely detailed in gold paint, with cleanly applied red paint on the crest.

I love that Planet X is filling a niche no one else is exploiting and hope that they can continue. While Mors and Aesclepius have not hit the high of Vulcun, they are both great figures. I can't wait to replace most of the official Fall of Cybertron figures with this line.
