KFC Kingzilla and Komodus - Snapdragon and Krunk

I really enjoyed KFC Kingorilla so had high hopes for Kingzilla. I'm glad I was not disappointed. Kingzilla is another rare triple changer with three enjoyable modes, but I hope this new smell is not a new thing for them.

Komodus is another typical Nebulon figure. He has almost the same articulation as Kongor. His head may be on a swivel. I can't tell because the helmet prevents me from turning it much. The teeth on his arms keeps him from being able to curl his arms much. His shoulders and hips are on ball joints. Unlike Konger, Komodus can curl his knees properly. He does not have magnets in his feet, but he does have foldout heel spurs. In either head mode, Komodus' own head peaks out from underneath the dinosaur upper jaw. He doesn't hold together all that well because the tabs aren't very tight.

Jet mode is awesome. So much so, I had to buzz my kids while making wooshing sounds. His canopy can open to reveal a light-up gimmick. Komodus fits just fine inside. His three landing gears actually keep him off the ground. The sculpt isn't perfect; there are gaps and visible dragon limbs. This is probably my second favorite jet mode after Revenge of the Fallen Mindwipe.

Transformation to dinosaur mode is ridiculously easy. There were no fiddly bits to mess with.

Dinosaur mode is a bet narmy, but at least it has some character. I'm surprised the tail works as well as it does, being the jet nose cone. His tiny arms are next to useless, but they do add to his charm. His legs are just his robot arms so he's less impressive than Kingorilla who has a completely different set of limbs for robot and beast modes. His head is on a swivel and his arms are hinged at several points.

As expected, transformation to robot mode is pretty simple. Although not quite as fun as Kingorilla's transformation, it is still enjoyable.

Kingzilla has a tall and lanky silhouette, especially when compared to Kingorilla. He has Die-cast on his flanks, thighs, dragon claws, and engine turbines. He also features the nolstagic tech spec gimmick from G1 Headmaster figures. The grey plastic has that same swirly patterns found in Kingorilla and Planet X figures. He could stand to have some more paint applications though. What little there is appears to be cleanly applied. I would have been happier if his grey parts were white though.

His head is on a swivel and has no vertical articulation. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges. He can't quite raise his arms out and upward to 90 degrees. He swivels at the biceps, forearms, and wrists. His elbows are double-jointed and can curl past 90 degrees. His fingers are typical KFC fingers - attached by tiny ball joints with a couple of knuckle articulations for each. He also has a ratcheted ab crunch. His hips are on ratcheted universals. He can perform a full side splits, but his backpack prevents him from lifting his legs directly behind him. His waist and thigh swivels are ratcheted. I forgot to mention it for Kingorilla, but Kingzilla also suffers from hip ratchets that are too widely spaced resulting in his legs being really far apart on the first notch. His double-jointed knees are ratcheted. They can't perform full curls because of the thickness of his calves. His ankles have ratcheted rockers and tilts.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, fire effects, a flight stand, a metal plate, and replacement robot face and rifle handles for Kingorilla. His rifles are purple plastic with some line work and some gunmetal highlights. They use Masterpiece-styled tabs that work well enough in his hands. They can also store in jet and dragon modes. The fire effects are for jet mode thrusters or robot mode nipples. The flight stand is clear plastic and works well enough, but he is a bit wobbly on it. I suppose the metal plate is for Kongor, but I don't see where to incorporate it on either figure. The replacement robot head for Kingorilla have eyes that are more metallic red than the originals. The eyes and chin are fuller and rounder. The rifle handles have larger tabs that actually work with Kingorilla's hands.

Now that he's aired out, Kingzilla will join the others on my KFC shelf and pull double-duty in my Masterpiece display. Although I love the idea of triple-changers, it's rare to enjoy all the modes on offer. KFC manages to provide six great modes across two figures. Yeah, there are some kibbly bits in the the various modes, but it's not enough to detract from my enjoyment. I'm absolutely looking forward to their future offerings so hope that Ditka was just an anomaly.
